Below is a statement that my brother bishop, @BishopBarron – a colleague on the Presidential Commission on Religious Liberty –recently issued. His comments are characteristically clear, and I agree wholeheartedly.

NB: In Latin, Per/fidus;per/fidia does not carry the modern English sense of “treacherous” or “deceitful.” It simply means “unbelieving.”. You can even see the root of fides (faith) in per(fidus) (unfaith). That’s how the word had been used up until modern times, in English. So, when you read/hear the prayer of good friday, it is simply used to distinguish unbelieving Jews from those Jews who have already been fulfilled in/transfer to the new covenant. We pray for those especially who are still under the veil (cf. 2 Corinthians 3:14–16). Moreover, the word (in Latin) appears in the Fathers applied to pagans and Christians (e.g., St. Cyprian contrasts per/fidia (faithless) with fides (faith). St. Augustine and others apply it to general unbelief in Christ; St. Ambrose and St. Gregory the Great employ related terms for lack of faith. Never forget, that “all Israel will be saved” (Romans 11) when the fullness of the Gentiles enters the Church.
