@henrywinter negative (11 men behind the ball) tactics when we were already under pressure? and when we won the ball there was no one to pass to? best team won, but we did not help ourselves

Good luck to the great Lionel Messi and Argentina in the World Cup final. And good luck to Thomas Tuchel trying to explain those defensive, expensive subs. #ENGARG

@afneil @afneil calm down, calm down. Take some blood pressure pills and/or statins..... I avoid buying Chinese goods wherever I can. Pretty easily. My new car, delivery in September, contains no Chinese parts, even the EV battery pack is 100% EU. I have never bought Apple products etc.

Volkswagen aims to axe up to 100,000 jobs in a “profound” strategic shift to counter trade tariffs, stagnating markets and, above all, fierce competition from China.
It will cut one in six of its 660,000 jobs worldwide and production at four German factories — the largest restructure in automotive industry history. China is out to do to Europe’s car industry what it’s already done to its solar panel industry — destroy it. Judging from the pathetic response of the EU so far to this threat (the UK is equally pathetic) it’s likely to succeed. China also aims to dominate batteries, wind power machinery, machine tools, Pharma and chips — with its mercantilist ‘industrial policy of everything’. China 2.0 poses a far bigger threat to European industry than China 1.0 over 20 years ago. Some forecasts predict over 50% of what’s left of Europe’s manufacturing base will be gone in a decade.

Was trepidatious last night about how many England fans would be at the stadium, would we be allowed to drape flags and general organisational issues. Needn't have worried. Of 70,000 in the stadium, 50,000 easily were supporting England, many non English but the juggernaut that is the Premier League ( and pyramid) topped up the top cappers, regulars and ex pats. Boston & New York there will be many more. Flags. Staff were helpful and got involved helping put them up and had their photos with them. As it should be, a celebration of who we are and who they are, a genuine coming together. Sweet Caroline, Wonderwall and Football's Coming Home at the end had people dancing, singing and again, involved ALL inside the stadium, so another exercise on bringing people together. Saw no trouble, England supporters are in 4k tidying up in different parts of the stadium and surrounds, getting out of the stadium with a car was easy, well policed and timely. There's plenty to criticise around this tournament, ticket pricing, f&b pricing, general price hiking etc. But in Dallas yesterday, getting in ( both media then as a fan) was frictionless, organisers heard the call for flags to be allowed, entertainment inside the stadium ( a little cheesy at times) was inclusive and designed to bring people together and the overall experience was excellent. So that must be said too. To Boston. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

England 4 Croatia 2. Whistle report from Dallas. All aboard the England rollercoaster. Carnival and chaos. Showed their wealth of attacking options. Harry Kane scored twice, Jude Bellingham confirmed his world class (but occasionally needs to be tighter in possession)… 1/2

Lots of calls for a wealth tax lately. It sounds good: tax the super-rich more so we can have more money for government services. But a couple of quick things you won't hear in the sound bites. Europe tried a wealth tax and mostly abandoned it. One big reason is that countries found that the cost of enforcing it were often higher than the tax revenue it brought in. Little to no money actually made it to those who needed it. To tax 'wealth' you need an army of new, highly trained (and highly paid) IRS agents to comb through super complex situations. Taxing income is relatively easy. Just take a specific % of a specific number and deduct a few things. Taxing wealth is hard, messy and incredibly complex (again, don't believe me .. ask the European nations who tried and abandoned it). And then what do you do when wealth falls? Let's say a family is worth $20 billion. They are taxed. Their family stock (and remember that 'wealth' is going to almost always be in stock, never in income) falls by 50%. Does the IRS have to write a billion-dollar refund check back to the family for taxing them on wealth that no longer exists? The family will sue for the money back. Which means another army of IRS agents will spend years tied up in analysis and litigation. Everyday taxpayers can and will fight audits over relatively small sums of money. What do you think the rich and their team of accountants are going to do? But we are a democracy and its voters demand it or Congress votes for it, let's give it a try. Maybe we can do taxes better than Europe. We certainly are a lot richer these days as they've driven themselves into a ditch. One upside of a new wealth tax would certainly be on DC real estate. We'd have to hire a massive number of new, well-paid auditors who will need a place to live. Anyway, you don't have to believe me. I work for CNBC know a lot of rich people so this will largely be discounted anyway. Do some quick research or use Chat or Gemini or whatever and let it give you an unvarnished answer. But like all things you hear ... things are usually more complex than simple sound bites -- or X posts -- can relate. Always happy to have polite, kind and fair debates on any topic. Look forward to further discussion. Go USA soccer and Go Knicks!

The thing that winds me up is how Elon has a trillion because he’s set up a system where he forcibly takes 40% of what hard working people produce, leverages it up as debt, spends it ineffectively and does dumb things to win the votes of millions of people who’ve become dependent on his handouts.

Football remains the beautiful game but the men who run it are managing to severely damage its reputation and it looks like they will be pressing the accelerator throughout this World Cup. It is incredibly sad.

I'm calling this now. England are going to have one of those tournaments where we're absolutely dreadful and barely get out of the group. I've just got a feeling. Don't think Tuchel knows what his best 11 is personally. Which is a worry #FIFAWorldCup2026

Fifa’s plan to have up to 15 reserves as well as the first XI gather in the centre-circle before kick-off is a bad idea – for starters. The World Cup is about the pursuit and celebration of excellence. Work hard for your club, play well and strive for the chance to represent your country. For an elite few…make the 26-man squad. For 11 chosen ones from the 26…make the starting XI. Others from the remaining 15 will come on, especially in the heat in certain cities at this World Cup (five in the 90min, one more if extra time). But the starting XI is the pinnacle. It’s what players aim for. It’s not an opportunity handed out freely. It’s an honour that has to be fought for, the special ones, the elite eleven. This is the essence of sport – competition. By having every member of the squad lining up before kick-off dilutes the focus on the XI. Including all the subs begins to echo those school sports days where everyone gets a medal. Fifa’s explanation is this: “Every player selected in the match-day squad will step into the spotlight to gather around the centre-circle banner for the national anthems, ensuring that every individual – not just the starting XI – experiences that symbolic moment of pride and emotion when representing their country on football’s greatest stage”. The starters will do the handshakes. The logic of having the players spread around the centre-circle is fair enough – so all the fans can see. The additional fanfare and bigger flags aren't an issue either. It’s simply part of the sporting show over here. No problem. England fans will sing over it anyway. But let's not meddle with the essence of sport. Competition. #WorldCup2026

@untypicalboro To not adjust your tactics after what? 14 games without a win, does not suggest 'no fannying around'. Squad was thin, but they had plenty of chances for the autos and players gave their all.

I see this as like the Karanka play-off season. He’s getting his bearings, he knows where he is short, who is not good enough mentally & physically to play his way. Next year he will tweak it and Gibbo will support him and there will be no fannying around. Automatics #Boro #UTB
