A hall of fame class of journalists is leaving @AP today — 40 reporters and photo/videographers who've taken buyouts as our US news operation shrinks. They've broken untold stories, captured searing images, held power to account and made us all smarter. We'll miss them dearly.

Today, Michiganders mourn the loss of our champion, Senator Don Riegle. From the factory floors of Flint to the halls of Congress, Don was a steadfast public servant who never backed down from the fight for workers and Michigan manufacturing. My prayers go out to his wife, Lori, and their beloved children.

Then-Senator Donald Riegle (D-MI) announced his retirement in Sept. 1993 on the Senate floor: "I lost my dad last year. I loved him very much. He too was in politics and loved public service. I know firsthand how hard it is to lose family hours together when your dad is out campaigning and then never get them back. Harry Chapin's song 'Cat's in the Cradle' has gotten harder and harder for me to listen to." He died Friday at 88. RIP @cspan

I’m saddened to learn that former Michigan U.S. Senator Don Riegle has passed. Don was a Michigander through and through. He served the people of our state with compassion and a fierce conviction for the values we all hold dear. He was a champion for Michigan workers, equality, and economic opportunity. Don was a friend, and as a dedicated public servant who always put our state and country first, he was also a mentor. Colleen and I are thinking of Don’s family as they grieve his loss.

The COVID-19 pandemic overwhelmed the U.S. health care system and killed more than a million Americans. When it comes to the outbreak of another pandemic, it's a question of "when," not "if." Fast-tracking vaccines saved millions of lives, but missteps in the government’s response and misinformation online damaged public trust. Six years after COVID-19 changed our lives, is the country prepared to handle another pandemic? "Having baseline levels of societal protection are absolutely critical for any major shock, including a pandemic," Elizabeth Cameron, a professor and senior advisor to the Pandemic Center at Brown University’s School of Public Health, told host William Brangham. "All of those things need to be handled now, before the next major pandemic, and we're really sliding backwards." Cameron, who previously worked on global health security for both the Obama and Biden administrations, said she has concerns about how the next pandemic could start. "We do see an increase in the likelihood that we could have an accidental or a deliberate release of a pandemic," she said.
