He said America’s wealth was built by working people with “calloused, dirt-streaked hands" while accusing the country of allowing the wealth built by workers to be concentrated in “the soft hands of a precious few.”

@elonmusk I don’t think you understand “free speech” when you throw in the word “facts”. Free speech is about not having to face the ever-shifting burden of what counts as “truth”. If we could all agree on what constitutes a “fact” we would not have a free/restricted speech problem.

Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry is wondering the same thing. “We don’t understand why she isn’t being charged with attempted murder... She tried to run down and kill a NYC police officer. She proudly admits it, but she still isn’t facing the maximum penalty. This kind of leniency has led to thousands of police officers being attacked and injured."

NEW: New York City driver intentionally plows her car into an NYPD officer, telling authorities she wanted to teach him a "lesson." This is what happens when you convince people that cops are the enemy. Terrible. Sahara Dula, who is a criminal justice graduate, was driving the wrong way when a police officer confronted her. "I told the cop I wanted to go straight, and he wouldn’t move, so I hit him. I did it on purpose,’’ Dula said to investigators. “F**k these cops! He wouldn’t move! F**k these cops, it’s a lesson to him, and hopefully he doesn’t want to be a cop anymore." Dula also admitted to being high on marijuana. She was *not* charged with attempted murder but was instead charged with first-degree attempted assault as well as other charges. The officer suffered a broken leg.

I just went to vote. Half way through the explanation from one of the helpers that their machines have been switching votes all day so I should double check my ballot.... I just held up my hand and explained........ "then I'm not voting on the machine."...I continued...." If you've been paying attention, that's how they have been stealing elections and they're not going to steal my vote today." They prepared my wife and I paper ballots, which we have receipts for to confirm our votes. I asked if they would like to see my identification and they replied "no that's not necessary". I replied...."That's very disappointing." Anyone that thinks our elections are secure at this point are fucking morons. This is happening every election...in federal, state and local elections. The machines belong in the scrap yard. Identification should be required. I could have been voting proxy for someone who isn't voting and they have no way to check it. The process is criminal, corrupt, and commonplace in all elections now. Our republic was stolen years ago. If we want it back, it's going to be messy.

I’ve spoken to people these past weeks who feel very angry: - they donated money to “elite” schools that went off script and created a generation of radicalized or infantilized students - they donated to the Democratic Party thinking it was unequivocally pro-Israel but it turned out to be much more complicated than that Billions of dollars in future donations are being turned off/paused as a result.

Right next to to Trump Tower, a huge television screen reportedly is broadcasting all of his indictments around the clock. It acts as a reminder of the crimes that the former President is accused of. Regardless of all this, Republicans still don’t seem to care. Will Republicans care if he’s convicted or will they just blame the jury and judge? Is there anything Trump could do that would convince them that he’s unfit for office?

@chamath @inkuchris369 There are 5 billion people globally who could easily claim economic hardship and persecution/marginalization. At best you have room for 0.1% while 50%+ are eligible. It would be better to skip hardship criteria and admit talent that can contribute at a much higher level on Day 1.

we need to have a secure border that limits entry but gives true asylum seekers a path to stay in the US. economic hardship based immigration should be enabled in some way as well because are better off with these folks adding to our economic vibrancy but only after we can securely know who is coming into the US.

US Border Security We took the federal data and analyzed it. Here is what we learned: To understand the issues at the southern border, one must account for the abrupt policy changes implemented over the past few years since Covid. Prior to March 2020, migrants could cross the border illegally, request asylum, and be allowed into the United States. They were taken into custody, screened, and often released inside the US to wait out their immigration or asylum case. This is referred to as apprehensions. In March 2020, CBP started operating under emergency health order Title 42. This allowed U.S. officials to deny asylum requests and return migrants over the border. This is referred to as expulsions. After President Biden took office, he indicated the desire to end Title 42 restrictions, prompting a string of lawsuits: (1) First, a group led by the ACLU sued to end Title 42 saying it violated U.S. asylum laws - a U.S. district court judge ruled in favor of the group and ordered the Biden Administration to stop using Title 42 at the border. (2) At the same time, a separate group sued to keep Title 42 in place. Eventually, the Supreme Court got involved and told the Biden Administration to keep Title 42 until they could review the case. In May 2023, however, President Biden ended the national public health order that allowed the government to invoke Title 42 in the first place. This ended Title 42, and since May, illegal migrants have been able to enter and remain in the country to apply for asylum like they did before Covid. But, if things are back to how they were pre-Covid, why are the number of encounters at the border at 20-year highs? It could be the result of a few factors: (1) The economic situations in other countries, particularly across South America, have worsened coming out of Covid. This has caused more people to flee their countries and come to the U.S. Prior to Covid, most illegal migrants came from Mexico and the Northern Triangle (El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala - denoted in black). Since then, this proportion has dropped significantly, with nearly two out of every three migrants coming from other countries. (2) Illegal migrants who were denied entry under Title 42 were turned away. This meant that those migrants could keep trying to cross the border again and again, either at the same location or somewhere else along the border, with the hope of not getting caught. This could be why the number of encounters has skyrocketed. If you look at the chart below, you can see the breakdown of expulsions (turned away at the border) vs. apprehensions (taken into custody and granted the ability to request asylum). As soon as the Biden Administration started to ease up on Title 42, the proportion of apprehensions has skyrocketed. Due to the increase in migrant encounters, the number of criminal noncitizens who were arrested by U.S. Border Patrol has nearly tripled between FY’19 and FY’23 YTD. Criminal noncitizens refers to individuals who have been convicted of one or more crimes, whether in the United States or abroad, prior to interdiction by the U.S. Border Patrol. Because border patrol agents do not have access to criminal records from many other countries, they rely on information from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database. This is a centralized repository that shares information among law enforcement agencies including outstanding offense warrants. Since border patrol agents must operate using this limited information, criminals for whom they do not have information may still be allowed into the country. I believe I commented on a similar video. There are so many questions that come to mind. First, this guy seems to have multiple high-end vehicles. Did he not have security measures in place? While the guy was determined not to give up his car, life is undoubtedly more valuable than a vehicle. It’s just not worth it. Personally, I would have handed over my keys and wallet. That’s why we have insurance, after all.

@elonmusk Actually, it is far, far worse than just losing custody. This sets the stage for courts being forced to rule that gender affirmation by others is a legal, positive right. Positive rights are the source of entitlement claims and devious re-distribution schemes.

This bill is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. What it would actually mean is that if you disagree with the other parent about sterilizing your child, you lose custody. Utter madness!

@KarSun01 @LawyerLiam @chamath When you raise prices, the resulting cancellations tend to get skewed. People at higher price points cancel to a greater degree than do people with cheap plans. New signups lean toward cheaper plans. Net effect? Lower ARPU.

This “turnaround” is not exactly a walk in the park. 1) The important learning from the last few earnings calls is that the economics of streaming are a “consumer surplus, race to the bottom” business. Terrible for the streamer without constantly trying to raise prices which will only elevate churn and lower ARPU. 2) Getting engulfed in political fights has distracted the company and alienated some of their most reliable customers. 3) Core IP library is decaying in value as content creators usurp traditional IP with new formats and content that existing libraries lack. Portends poorly for asset value of traditional IP and partially explains why movie business has shrunk so much.
