I joined SAPS in the mid-2000s, and I was there well in excess of ten years. I worked mainly in Jhb's northern suburbs. Rape kits were always a scarcity. On the very rare occasions that kits became available, I'd grab at least one, just so our unit had at least one, if needed. At the same time, we had to hope that the kit wasn't already expired... The same was true for blood-alcohol test kits. Extremely rare and often expired. Evidence bags rarely made an appearance. At least those didn't expire. Basic paperwork: Foolscap was usually available, but docket covers could be tricky at times. ORIGINAL official forms [3M(a), 3M(b), etc.] were hardly ever available. We made due with photocopies of photocopies of photocopies... assuming there was A4 paper available. I ended up having a full kit bag, half the weight of which was just paperwork and other items that the SAPS was meant to have readily available but hardly ever did. Still, I had a blast. Miss it.

The rape kit issue has been with us since at least 2013. That is THIRTEEN YEARS in which the SAPS has not solved the problem, and allowed it to get worse. 13. Years. gov.za/news/media-sta…

JUST IN: Three police constables have been shot dead following a shooting in Kariega, Eastern Cape, in the early hours of this morning. According to police, officers responded to reports of shots fired at a residence in Rudman Street at approximately 00:45. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered three constables suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Two officers were declared dead at the scene, while a third succumbed to injuries after being transported to Cuyler Hospital. Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident may have stemmed from a domestic dispute. Police believe a male constable, who was reportedly the former boyfriend of a female constable, allegedly forced his way into the residence where the female officer and another male constable were present Witnesses reportedly heard gunshots shortly afterwards, leaving all three members fatally wounded. A state-issued firearm was recovered at the scene along with 10 live rounds of ammunition. Ballistic testing will form part of the ongoing investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. “Due to the nature of the incident involving police members, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified and is conducting a parallel investigation in line with the IPID Act. SAPS has also opened an internal disciplinary investigation.” The identities of the deceased officers have not yet been released pending the notification of their next of kin.

While it’s absolutely tragic that we have another road death , I still feel it’s irresponsible for an MP to be acting as judge and passing verdict on the other driver. There are about 11000 road deaths a year in SA - 30 a day - all of which are tragic and are someone’s child . Not sure why this one in particular is so newsworthy in that context .
