It was Chelsea’s idea for Alonso to have title of "manager" instead of "head coach" because they were so impressed with his leadership qualities. He did not ask to have the manager title. Alonso will not be wedded to playing three at the back at Chelsea. He used that formation at Bayer Leverkusen because it suited the players he had in his squad. He is more than happy to play with a back four. Chelsea will play different formations under him. As things stand, he is unlikely to be at the Spurs game on Tuesday. The current football leadership structure Chelsea have will remain in place. None of the sporting directors will be leaving. They were all involved in Alonso’s appointment. Chelsea met with other candidates they were given permission to speak to. They were very impressed with Andoni Iraola and he made a real impression and impact during their conversations. Chelsea have held multiple meetings with Alonso about all aspects of the job over a number of weeks. Alonso will be involved in recruitment and Chelsea expect to sign 3/4 players this summer, including a centre back. Chelsea have no concerns about Alonso’s experience managing Real Madrid. Despite only managing there for a short spell, Alonso had a win percentage of more than 70%, winning 24 of 34 games. Senior figures at Real Madrid gave him glowing references. He will be officially announced the new Chelsea manager tomorrow (Sunday) and he will start work on 1 July.

McFarlane is liked and respected by the players so no real issue that he stays on. He will help Alonso with information on behind scenes issues as he has been there to see it first hand. As a coach he has had two very close games with Liverpool and City. Also seen as a bridge for the younger players. Not sure why people are complaining.

@Statford_Bridge Club were never going to dismiss him, it’s not easy going back to u21 who now have their own promoted coaches. It’s a bridge to help both Mcfarlane and transition. He’s not the main assistant. It’s no harm to the team or club. I don’t see the big issue.

@CFCMJordan @TheScore01 Hussain salman and eb brand suit better for this. Fact Steve Holland is a Manchester united than chelsea is absolutely dramatic. Cueva is neutral in this conversation. Defiencies in set pièces is more reliant squad buildings than in coaching phase.

Callum McFarlane likely stays on as he is very well liked and highly regarded by the player group.
Bernardo Cueva has actually had us quite good at attacking set-pieces — we've just been a nightmare defending them.
Xabi bringing with him Sebastian Parilla — who excels particularly on defensive set-pieces can point to a shared responsibility between the two.
Ben Roberts just seems very highly rated from within.
He's also done a very good job developing Robert Sanchez into a fairly decent keeper — despite clearly not being everyone's favorite.

He did good work at Manchester City and Southampton, where player progression is valued more than results, and he is also appreciated by sporting directors for City period
