Illinois has hit rock bottom. We are now ranked No. 1 in the U.S. for the highest property taxes. If you feel like you are being priced out of your own home, you are right. But, predictably, Springfield is hiding the reasons why. Skyrocketing tax bills are endlessly funding a broken system. Pension debt in Illinois is completely exempt from tax levy caps. This means government debt is growing mathematically faster than what taxpayers can afford. Without constitutional pension reform, it's not possible for property taxes to go down. Worse, local governments are exploiting loopholes in the property tax cap law (PTELL) and abusing TIF districts to siphon money from communities without any proof of addressing "blight." It is taxation without accountability, and it is draining your bank account. The ultimate fix? Grow the tax base. We need to make Illinois an affordable, pro-growth state by cutting red tape and lowering business taxes. When more people want to live and work here, the tax burden on you goes down.
