Over a million people in Uganda just downloaded Bitchat, a peer-to-peer private message app utilizing bluetooth and Nostr. No internet, phone number, or personal information required. Why? Because elections are coming up, and citizens are worried the government will censor communications by shutting off the internet. Unfortunately for the Uganda government, they can’t shut down Bitchat. In 2021-2, when Cambridge University reporting was showing Bitcoin was using 62.4% fossil fuel, The Altantic, Wired, Reuters, BBC, NBC, NYT, NewScientist, The Guardian all ran articles attacking Bitcoin mining, citing Cambridge. In 2025, when Cambridge University reporting shows Bitcoin mining is using 52.4% sustainable energy while helping stabilize grids, and mitigate methane - guess who in the mainstream media is reporting it? Not one I guess it doesn't make such a good headline. This does however reveal one thing clearly: if you rely on news sources for information on Bitcoin mining, your perspectives will have been manipulated by selective reporting.
