Trauma surgeons often need to act on CT scans before a formal read is available. This commentary reviews evidence showing surgeons interpret CTs accurately and argues they should routinely review images in real time while collaborating with radiology. journals.lww.com/annalsofsurger…

US nonprofit hospitals spent $7.8 billion on management consultants from 2009 to 2023, but contracts were not associated with meaningful changes in finance, operations, or quality of care. 🧵 ja.ma/4d46zfq

Dr. J.P. Wilson taught me this in 1998 as I began my general surgery residency… I still sit or kneel at the bedside when I round. It takes me longer to get up, but allowing them to look low into my eyes as we speak is important for both me and them. Glad to see the data.
Ross Prager@ross_prager

Physicians who sit at the bedside (compared to standing) are perceived to have spent longer with their patient and have higher patient satisfaction.

Preoperative circulating tumor DNA (#ctDNA) detection in early-stage esophageal squamous cell carcinoma was associated with nodal metastasis and poorer survival, supporting its use for risk stratification. ja.ma/4kELqfa

The proportion of NSCLC diagnosed as stage I is soaring in the VA while it is only barely rising in other healthcare systems across the US. If all insurance systems achieved the unadjusted stage distribution seen in the VA, an additional 45,684 pts would be diagnosed with stage I and 65,933 fewer stage IV. Thanks to the LA Times for continuing to report on everyone who (a) caused the LA fires thru sheer incompetence/stupidity, (b) had no real plan for stopping the fires, and/or (c) tried to cover up their own mistakes/liability afterwards. What a disgrace. latimes.com/california/sto…

Please take a few minutes to read this moving story by @SimarSBajaj in @nytimes about the soul-crushing weight of stigma that so many people with lung cancer carry every day. I was nearly in tears reading it. We must do a better job of destigmatizing lung cancer. No patient should ever be made to feel this alone. I also want to express my deepest gratitude to Ms. Cottrill, Ms. Padua-Reyes, and Mr. Pantelas for sharing your stories. I am profoundly grateful for your courage in opening up about such deeply personal experiences—your voices matter, and they are changing lives. Link: nytimes.com/2026/01/14/wel…

It’s problematic to define complication severity by return to OR or need for gen anes. Doing so risks creating inappropriate avoidance of returning to OR. Furthermore it simply makes no sense. Severity should not be defined by how we fix the complication, but rather how it impacts the patient!

~13yrs of neoadjuvant adventure comes to positive conclusion (for now)! In @NEJM today & presented at #ASCO25 5 yr survival for pts w lung cancer that can be removed by surgery is better with just 3 doses of immunotherapy before the operation! nejm.org/doi/full/10.10… #LCSM 1/
