Gratitude to the thief who took my ebike in March. I bought a fixie, mastered its repair, shed 10 pounds since and feeling better than ever. As God weaves good from evil, so too does adversity forge virtue. Rise, confront chaos, and find meaning! #Lemonade

A @PurdonLab classic.
Stanford Knight Initiative for Brain Resilience@BrainResilience
@pddoc @StanfordNsurg @Stanford_Neuro @StanfordBrain @StanfordMed To illustrate how brain rhythms may affect cognition, Purdon sings a few bars of “Fly Me to the Moon.” EEG data collected by his team during surgical anesthesia suggest these brain-wave recordings may reflect brain health and could be further developed to help measure resilience.

@pddoc @StanfordNsurg @Stanford_Neuro @StanfordBrain @StanfordMed Next up is neuroengineer Patrick Purdon, who discusses whether EEG can serve as a marker of brain resilience. He notes that we still understand little about delirium, but new EEG tools may help track real-time cognitive changes in clinical settings.

Our study found that reduced opioid administration during surgery may have the unintended outcome of increasing postoperative pain and opioid use. The paper is now out on @JAMASurgery. Read it here:

New paper from @FangyunT @NatureComms shows that ketamine increases gamma oscillations in frontal and limbic structures, and that propofol can reverse this effect in prefrontal cortical structures. doi.org/10.1038/s41467…

176 years ago today, the 1️⃣ successful public demonstration of the use of ether for surgical anesthesia was performed at MGH. Every year on Oct. 16, we celebrate #EtherDay, the birth of #anesthesiology and the transformation of surgery to a humane and often lifesaving therapy.

Fentanyl’s Effects on the Brain
Fentanyl exposure produces specific EEG signatures in the brain. The findings also revealed the drug impairs people's breathing four minutes before noticeable changes in alertness.
