My constituent Ellen Mei, a dedicated USDA employee, was unlawfully terminated after warning the public of the administration’s cuts to SNAP. Her firing was a violation of her right to free speech, and she was one of the hundreds of thousands of federal workers terminated by Donald Trump and Elon Musk's DOGE unlawful firing frenzy. That's why we've fought hard for Ellen and federal workers like her to be reinstated so they can continue serving our country. I’m so glad to hear she was reinstated and restarted her job this week. But she should have never been fired to begin with. North Carolina offers some of the lowest starting teacher pay in the entire nation. That's a political choice, not a financial necessity. The leaders of our state legislature are openly hostile to public education. They don't want to resource it because they want it to fail. They want North Carolina families to pull their kids out of public schools, so that one day, they can eliminate public schools completely. It's a radical right-wing ideological fantasy - and there are dozens of people in our state legislature who'd love to do it today. But those lawmakers don't reflect North Carolinians, our values, or what we want. Those lawmakers are the products of pervasive Republican gerrymandering that have all but nullified the influence voters have over our state legislature. Their rule is corrupt and fundamentally illegitimate. Like many things, this bizarre race to the bottom in education is a product of gerrymandering. It won't last forever - and change is coming.
