I get it, and to each their own absolutely. I just don't find having religious ideologies akin to gender ideologies. I don't believe in religion but it's part of every culture dating back forever and the gender stuff is relatively fresh in comparison. Your neighbor asked you still before for reading the Bible/church, she understood that it could potentially not be ok. This grandmother didn't. She jumped into sharing a highly criticized ideology with a 3 year old without realizing implications or considering the parents beliefs. I guess I'm just a little more hesitant for second chances from such a highly influential figure in my family. I've always joked that my kiddo knows no strangers, he's only 6 and loves people in general. He turned his prek class bully into his friend and found out his dad was deployed and he was having some issues with it. I encourage talking, sympathy, and delving into why a person is the way they are through common sense and facts. But I won't have somebody talking to my kid about their genitals unless it's his parents/supervised doctor; he's been told that this is dangerous behavior and to stop speaking to that person and tell me asap. Even my very gay very very liberal BFF of 20 years who knows my stance would not answer why she doesn't have a husband when my son asked and let me navigate that. Sorry, long winded I know 😂; I just appreciate being able to have a good discussion with a level headed person that makes me think rather than just regurgitating talking points.

There are lots of ppl who would feel like giving you or your kids a Bible are akin to giving them a gender book, making the same arguments you are. Another example, our former neighbors were devout Southern Baptists. Women don't cut their hair, only wear skirts, corporal punishment for the children (spare the rod, spoil the child type). I still let my kids play w/ their kids, sometimes w/o my direct supervision, b/c they weren't enforcing or promoting any of their beliefs w/ my kids. They'd ask if my kids could go to church w/ them or read Bible passages. I just politely declined & it was a non-issue. Ppl w/ wildly different beliefs than you are everywhere & chances are your kids are going to encounter them often & even sometimes be friends w/ them. I'd rather my kids have those experiences while I'm still the biggest influence in their life so we can safely navigate it together. That doesn't mean surrender all my beliefs & put my kids in harms way. My former in-laws culturally also didn't believe in the need for car seats. I made it clear it was non-negotiable for my kids. They thought it was silly, but they respected my wishes to maintain a healthy relationship w/ my kids. Most ppl parroting the gender stuff aren't on board w/ medicalizing or mutilating kids. They're just trying to be kind & have very little clue about the broader implications.

It's funny you say that because I've been in that situation too, religious in laws while we're not. I don't find it comparable though, most mainstream religions have been around for centuries and religion has always been normalized. My in laws have never talked religion with me or my kid but have sent us home with Bibles, they just get quietly donated. The dangerous part is the lack of critical thinking. If a percentage of society tried to normalize cutting off kids ears as a form of mental health care (obviously not a thing but to make a point) and a person doesn't innately see an issue with that, it makes that person dangerous to me. I'm not very black and white/all or nothing with most issues, but when it comes to mutilation/medical intervention with potentially lifelong issues/disregard for how biology plays a role in sex differences, I am. It's worth noting though, that I still have sympathy for people caught up in the social trend while still finding them to be a threat. Honestly, I view everybody as a potential threat until they've proven to be otherwise and that has included my family.

I guarantee you most ppl who innocuously do these things have not critically put any thought into it. They are going w/ the trends. Yes, this one is particularly dangerous as an ideology, but I don't believe every person who has succumbed to the social contagion/in group influence is a dangerous person. Ofc monitor the situation, but I don't think we need to treat this particular scenario to the equivalent of someone who is an imminent threat to the child. MIL has some wacky beliefs, but unless she's crazy like hell bent on enacting them on your kid AFTER you've set the boundary, I don't see the need to treat her like I would someone's dog. She gave the parents a book. She didn't go behind their backs to give it to the child w/o their input. Treat ppl in good faith unless they give you a real reason not to. I'm in good faith assuming MIL is being transparent & trying to do the right thing. It's a golden opportunity to set a boundary. It also gives MIL something critical to think about. She doesn't have to immediately change her mind either, so long as she immediately respects the parent's wishes. I look at it as akin to when my former in-laws had different religious beliefs than I did. I fundamentally disagreed w/ a lot of their beliefs. I let my kids go to their house to hang out. I didn't let them go to church w/ them on Sundays. It's really as simple as that. Too much all or nothing is partly how we ended up here in the first place.

I used to try to see the best in people and try to attribute to ignorance as well. There was a point where I realized, if you are naive enough to truly believe children should explore sexuality and gender fluidity, you are a danger to children. If a group of people can make that "normalized" to you, what else can they make normalized? Her ignorant empathy and ethical malleability makes her a danger to a 3 year old, regardless of intent.

Could be, but I try not to immediately attribute what could be ignorance to malice. This kind of thing has become so normalized, particularly in very liberal circles, MIL might be genuine. A lot of them are well meaning but misinformed. Imo it's only a red flag worthy of further intervention if she continues after the standard/boundary is clearly set & defined by the parents. It could also be a good opportunity to educate the MIL. I've found most ppl are understanding & receptive once I explain my position. The ones who aren't, that's who I limit exposure to & cut off.

I think because the person is on a centrist thread, the MIL is trying to get a read on them and using the book as a "test". Giving that to any child without asking parental permission is already a Red flag and should be considered crossing a boundary that is already established in society. "Don't talk to my kid about their reproductive parts unless you are their doctor and I'm in the room" is pretty common sense. Pretending this boundary doesn't exist is dangerous and should be enough to cut down to only supervised interactions if any at all.

I'd just tell her we'll be handling sex & gender education ourselves for our children. We're not comfortable w/ anyone else talking to our children about this. Thanks but no thanks on the book. Her response to those boundaries would inform my next steps on our relationship & her relationship w/ my children.

@Susan4Freedom @darkwriter69 @Mschatnoir @LoveofMaths1 Yeah, his behavior is unacceptable, totally agree. My point was if you don't address the caveats that the opposing opinion uses, they will keep using them as of they are actually relevant. In this case, yes, it's a possibility; but due to rarity, it's not relevant.

As somebody who TAd her chem and orgo lab (in our podunk community college/not a big university) it looks routine to me. We had a store room with 12 of those 5 layer industrial metal shelves filled to the brim with all kinds of chemicals/compounds/acids/bases. The smallest quantity you could order of these things is 1L. Doesn't seem like much but if you take a single little drop of copper compound and hold that over a flame, it'll go green for about 10-12 seconds. I imagine a big university would have a few Ls so this looks correct 🤷🏼‍♀️. This is not to say that it's not dangerous for those around it though. I've never been a mask person, but people in the vicinity should wear some.

@darkwriter69 @Mschatnoir @LoveofMaths1 I got what you meant girl, I despise absolutes in science. There's always a caveat that should be addressed and that caveat being <20 cases. It isn't in his defense because it would be an almost statistical impossibility for him, but if you don't address it they will.

Thinking good thoughts for your wife! (Not a religious person so that's my equivalent to prayer). I love the vault inscriptions! I've been with my husband 16 years so far (since I was 15). I joke that I'll have to taxidermy him because I can't function without him. Now I'm going to have to think of our own cool inscription!

That was a very nice thing you did... I am sentimental like that... My wife is in very poor health... When she passes, she is getting cremated... A companion urn with some of her in it will go into my vault ... Companion urns of my parents are going in mine as well. The plot and monument are already in place... With two inscriptions... "They don't let you out for good behaviour" and "Together Forever" with two hearts interlinked between the words.

Have a necklace with my papas ashes in it. I took him across the stage getting my associates and masters, down the aisle at my wedding, and in the hospital bed as I was having his first great grand baby. He was there for every special moment for 24 years, he wasn't going to miss the rest! I'm glad you treated your dad to dinner and drinks, I'm sure he deserved it!

Are U serious... My father died in 2007... A few years later, my mother went on vacation to Florida and did not want him left alone... So, I took him (in his urn) out drinking, bar hopping... and a nice dinner. Told my mother about it too when she got back. Pissed herself laughing when I showed her the pictures. I have my family plot ready... You have to have a sense of humor because Death claims us all eventually. On my Granite monument it states "They Don't Let You Out For Good Behaviour"

I get your point, but that's saying these parents are incapable of making them snacks. You can ebt butter- oats-flour-sugar-frozen berries: and you can make a super tasty berry oatmeal bars. You can dupe from scratch most snacks and they are usually a lot healthier. I did it a lot last year for my kids pre k when we were really hurting on money. DIY lunchables, cheeze-it's, chips, etc. The question would be why a child who's parent is utilizing snap is more deserving of store bought snacks than those who make just a little over the cut off and have to buy all of their own food? Why of the parent who utilizes snap time more valuable than the parent that doesn't and has to make their own? We couldn't afford it at the time but I found a way for him to get treats with What little we had.

@olgakhazan I like how everyone is just assuming the dad also doesn't exist. Let's assume every mom has a superpower that causes her to never roll over her baby. What about dad? Assuming they sleep together, is he supposed to sleep on the couch/air mattress for a year?
