California has increased spending by 75% in six years. Are your bills 75% cheaper? Are our schools 75% better? No. Because the problem isn’t how much we spend — it’s how we spend it. And I’ll only spend taxpayer dollars on policies that actually make people’s lives better. Plan out tomorrow. Thanks for the conversation @friedberg!

@HyperAICapital Power draw is probably a better indicator of what’s happening on the ground. Just how big are some of these? In CA for example there are 5 major data centers being built targeting ~ .5 TW of useable power.

You know what kills your site performance? Rendering 3000px of content when the user can only see 900px. And there is an easy fix for that. It's a magical CSS property content-visibility: auto.

@balajis Unless there is some underlying black box architectural change under the hood, open source will eventually dominate.

It’s all open source models from here. American AI companies are simultaneously fighting Democrats (by automating blue jobs), Republicans (by rankling the US military), and China (by fruitlessly combating distillation attacks). Solve for the equilibrium: open source models become the only trusted models. Centralized American AI burns bright, makes a ton of money, but eventually gets outcompeted by the privacy, freedom, and trust of decentralized local AI.
Dean W. Ball@deanwball

Nvidia, Amazon, Google will have to divest from Anthropic if Hegseth gets his way. This is simply attempted corporate murder. I could not possibly recommend investing in American AI to any investor; I could not possibly recommend starting an AI company in the United States.

@TimKoltek It’s surprising that people would rather incinerate money so they can tinker with something that already happens in mega scale, safe and far away.

🚨 DIABETES CURE… OR THE BEGINNING OF A MEDICAL REVOLUTION? For over a century, diabetes has meant daily injections, constant monitoring, and a lifetime of management. But now, scientists in China and researchers at Vertex Pharmaceuticals in the United States have done something shocking, they used stem cells to create new insulin-producing cells and transplanted them into real patients. And here’s the twist… Some people with Type 1 diabetes started making their own insulin again. No pump. No syringe. Just living cells doing their job. It’s not a full cure yet. Trials are still small, and long-term results are unknown. But for the first time, medicine isn’t just managing diabetes, it’s trying to rebuild the pancreas itself. Science fiction? Not anymore..

@stevemur @GavinNewsom Interesting how many of those are paper moves or expansions. Outside of Chevron most of the heavily lifting for those companies still happens in CA.

The economic boom everyone’s missing 🔥 @DavidSacks “I suspect we’ll look back on this time period as the beginning of a new Golden Age.” - Strong GDP growth (Q3 >4%, Q4 >5%) - Massive private-sector job creation (+172k in January, +615k in Trump’s term) - Unemployment dropping to 4.3% - Construction jobs surge (+33k in January, driven by data centers) - AI boom - Government jobs cut (-300k+ → higher productivity) - Economy re-privatizing - All new jobs going to native-born Americans - Voluntary government buyouts (no forced layoffs) - Huge infrastructure investment (software, applications, productivity gains)

@gilduran76 Right or Left we absolute have to preserver the 40-50% of income tax revenue we’re about to loose. Social programs are about the get the largest budget cut in CA history and all everyone wants to do is play RED/BLUE games.

In California, the right-wing tech billionaires behind Trump are funding Matt Mahan for governor. Leading the pack: Joe Lonsdale, the Palantir co-founder who says the USA should resume public hangings. Why is a Trump oligarch funding a Democrat? thenerdreich.com/palantir-for-g…

You can leave California for Texas or Florida. Or go further afield.
Alessandro Palombo@thealepalombo

Everyone is leaving California. Wealth and success in the next decade won't just be about what you build. It'll be about how anti-fragile what you build actually is. If you're wealthy, anywhere in the world, not only American or European, you should consider second residencies. Not just second passports. Here are 8 residencies with zero or near-zero physical presence requirements. Think of them as hedges: asset, currency, and geopolitical diversification. You don't have to move. You don't have to change your tax residency. - Thailand (Privilege Card): ~$20K for 5 years. Skip tourist limits. Tax-friendly base if you ever relocate. Probably the best entry-level option out there. - Cyprus (Golden Visa): €300K+ in real estate or funds. Immediate PR, Schengen access. Non-dom regime means 17 years of foreign income untaxed if you spend 60+ days there. No minimum stay to maintain it. In my view, the new gold standard. - Greece (Golden Visa): €400K real estate or €250K in startups. Zero days required. Schengen plus an optional €100K/year flat tax. Flies under the radar. Djokovic chose it. - Portugal (Golden Visa): €250K cultural donation or €500K in funds. About 7 days a year gets you full EU citizenship in 5 years. No need to relocate. Rules will likely tighten. If citizenship is your priority, this is the way. - UAE (Golden Visa): ~$550K via real estate or term deposit. 10-year residency. Maximum flexibility. The Platinum Standard. I only see UAE growing from here. - Mexico: Direct PR via income or investment. Strong passport optionality long-term if you move. One of the most interesting Latin options. Tell me if you see a better one. - Italy (Investor Visa): €250K startup or €500K company. No minimum stay. Renewable long-term. Optional flat-tax or other exemption regimes. No better lifestyle-optionality play in Europe. - Panama: Friendly nations can use company formation. Others use bank deposits, property, or pension. Time counts toward naturalization. Underrated. My friends in Panama praise it more than most people expect. Privacy, political instability, free speech: concerns emerge cyclically across every bloc. Hedging is just the reasonable thing to do. Wherever you are, whatever phase you're in, there's a strategy that fits your level. Which one would you add?
