On the evening of 12 August 2026, a major solar eclipse will be visible across Wales. At maximum eclipse (7:12pm), around 94% of the sun will be obscured in Aberystwyth. Across the UK, at least 90% will be covered, with the west of Ireland seeing around 98% of the sun covered. There’s a line of totality which follows roughly the east coast of Greenland and the west coast of Iceland before cutting across northern Spain. If you happen to be in the Balearics at this time, it should be a fascinating sunset.

We’re heading for a strong El Niño event developing in coming months. Potential for it to become strongest on record alongside 1982, 1997 and 2015. Not what Earth needs, global sea surface temperatures remain high despite weak La Niña over winter. We’ve failed to vent properly and now this natural phenomenon looks to escalate our troubles. It can’t be scripted more sinisterly. One would think 2027 is highly likely to be a record breaking warm year globally.

@ClimateBen I assume that a lot of this is down to what actually classifies as a mass extinction. I’d be surprised to see us manage to keep global warming below 3C in the long term, which isn’t a great sign as academic literature points towards 4C being enough for societal collapse

@BritishIslesMet A majorbm mass extinction can occur in decades/centuries if habitat & wildlife destruction and pollution continue at extreme levels. Deforestation alone could lead to a major mass extinction by 2200-2250. If the destruction of nature ends, <2°C would mean a minor mass extinction.

Global warming of 1.7-1.8°C: * rapid mass extinction * collapse of tropical systems essential to human existence as we know it confirmed * majority of glaciers destroyed * billions in extreme danger of death from hostile conditions This is the THEORETICAL best-case scenario.

@BritishIslesMet @KSuit2222 Hmm I don't think I agree with that. 2015 is a good example of why. 2022 had warm waters and was v warm/hot.

I’ve got a bad feeling that this will effect the UK’s weather in a bad way. This is currently very far out at the moment but we will see what the effects this could do.

4C of global warming is enough for society to collapse. A mid-range emission scenario reaches this by 2300, and emissions are tracking well above it. Climate change is no joke. The system of infinate growth on a finite planet needs to be abolished
