I met many aspiring artists in my early 20s. Observing their trajectories since then, I've learned that long-shot careers in the arts (famous singer, actor, songwriter, filmmaker, etc.) are long shots not because success relies on wild luck or rare genius or insane connections. Success stories pretty reliably happen for people who combine three not-that-remarkable things: solid talent, savvy business sense, 15-20 years of persistent hard work. It's just that most people only pull off one or two of those things and not all three.

I still don't know what lead to "success". But I know what leads to insuccess: a temperament of complaint, the mentality of permanent victimhood, and the collective and individual propensity for lamentation.

Don't mistake quick thinking for IQ. Rapid answers often reflect shallow reasoning. Data: smarter people are faster on easy problems but slower on hard ones. They know haste makes waste, and they want to get it right. Refusing to trade accuracy for speed is a sign of intellect.

Too often, companies make it difficult to unsubscribe from a service, wasting Americans’ time and money on things they may not want or need. I support @FTC's proposal requiring companies to fix this. It shouldn’t be harder to cancel a service than it was to subscribe for it.

The value of reading, and of writing things down that we read, or hear, cannot be overstated. Two expert guests (who specialize in speech and memory) on the Huberman Lab podcast explained that when we read text or listen to something and then write key aspects/takeaways down by hand- not typing, it engages our motor control centers in ways that deeply embed that information to our memory. Taking notes, however cursory, turns out to be the best way to remember and implement information later.
