The team is obviously nervous; that’s why you see certain bad habits creep in towards the end of games.
I maintain and continue to stress that it’s not Mikel Arteta telling the boys to sink deeper and deeper, contrary to perhaps popular belief. I can assure you that he obviously wants them to push forward and press; let’s use common sense.
But he’s not on the pitch; it’s the players who are out there and naturally as the game draws closer to the end, it’s a common tendency to feel more comfortable closer to your own goal than to play high, despite it inducing stress, with variance very much in play too. What further compounds the issue is us lacking someone who can consistently make it stick to relieve pressure (e.g Havertz/Merino). Kai becomes massive for us here.
In short, it’s on the players more than the manager to show bravery. It’s so easy to point blame on Mikel here.

@verstappennn_ He was a great stepping stone player and I would argue in 2022-23 one of the best players in his position. But we have moved past him and more importantly the league has moved past this type of player
