Vital point here. There are no winners, unless you think gratifying Phillipson & Reeves' spite is some kind of 'win.'

@RupertLowe10 @JamesRolsche Well that gets my vote! Labour have needlessly wrecked education at a time when we need to improve standards. I have children in both state and private and I can tell you there have been no winners with this tax policy!

Kim you are naive. The top elite schools are a mixture of state and independent schools and heavily concentrated in the south and London. Independent schools in the north go some way to levelling up but now parents can’t afford them, the divide deepens. There is no utopia, it won’t happen, this is socialist vandalism. Free elite education is all about money in expensive houses see the link below uniadmissions.co.uk/application-gu…

A Restore Britain Government would immediately reverse Labour's cruel VAT raid on private schools. It is leading to school closures, job losses and more pupils being forced into state schools that simply cannot cope with the additional demand - everyone then suffers, obviously. With so many students now being lumped into state schools that are already struggling, what's the result for children in those institutions? Less teacher time and stretched resources. Worse outcomes. We're told the funds raised are being used to 'support public services'. Total bollocks and we all know it. The staggering lack of any logic from this Government is so painful. Labour's private school VAT raid is really nasty politics. Restore Britain would reverse it.

@RupertLowe10 What about the scrapping these schools altogether or at least stopping their charitable status. Make education equal for everyone

Indeed. I take issue with painting all independent schools as Eton and all state schools as Waterloo road when like humans they are all different, yet an independent school and state school with similar outcomes but one is free and in London and the other is independent and in hull, only the one in hull is taxed and punished, when it is likely the parents of the kids who attend are similar of not richer in London. It stinks of socialism spite and ignorance

@ChloeMac20 @bphillipsonMP I have nothing against the *schools* that turn out dozens of kids suitable for Oxbridge. I go take issue with those individuals pretending they were brought up in a shoe.

@bphillipsonMP There is only 1 school in the top 80 schools getting into Oxbridge in Yorkshire. It is a state sixth form college. Yet there are 50 independent schools in Yorkshire that dont feature on this list. Going to an excellent state school in London or the south east is more likely to get you into Oxbridge, and yet they punish parents for trying to give children a good education that is not as readily available as there is on offer in the south. The policy should be abolished asap. It is wrong. uniadmissions.co.uk/application-gu…

I think the stress they have caused to families and children, when access to an ‘elite’ state school is very limited in northern areas and they are mostly in London and the south east, parents paying for a similar education, not elite, at no expense to the state in Yorkshire, are being forced into financial hardship for living in the wrong place and we have been met with nothing but lies about social justice from Labour when this is not social justice in Yorkshire it is destruction of good education not even on par to the state school of the south. Hate feels fitting to me.

@ChloeMac20 @bphillipsonMP I don't know that I hate them, I just hate the snobbery of state schooled people pretending to be holier than thou while perpetuating a system that causes even greater social inequality.

@KitPeacock @bphillipsonMP Yep, it’s a total joke to say independent school anywhere other than the top 30 independent schools are ‘elite’ the London state and south east state schools are more elite by a country mile. I never saw the evidence before but now I have you can’t hate them enough

@ChloeMac20 @bphillipsonMP Yep, in Derby your chances of Oxbridge in a state school are close to zero, and your chances from the top Derby independents about 8x lower than a top London SS.

Some children go back to school on Monday. Not the children of St Lawrence’s College. The Govts plethora of tax rises made the school unviable. 500 kids are school less. And some people are PLEASED! I know. What f*****s would celebrate a child’s education being disrupted? 1/3

Excellent point. Additional middle income families who can’t afford fees anymore are not going to improve the overall state system as the rich state families just congregate in rich postcodes and have elite education by virtue of income. The whole policy is total socialist nonsense

@C29215274971 @TheScholar44 @OfficialLouRR 25% of private school families are in the bottom half of the household income distribution. These are likely the families that can’t afford VAT and will therefore move to the state sector. Why haven’t the families with similar incomes in the state sector improved schools?

@C29215274971 @TheScholar44 @OfficialLouRR You have far more wealthy families already in the state school system. Are you suggesting that in a cohort of 9 million state school children, adding the least affluent private school families (37k the government said) will improve anything for 9 million)? Or create equality?

There is only 1 school in the top 80 schools getting the most number of students into Oxbridge in Yorkshire. It is a state sixth form college. Yet, there are 50 independent schools, some with more than 1500 students, in Yorkshire, that dont feature on this list. Going to an excellent state school or state sixth form in London or the South East is more likely to get you into Oxbridge, and yet northern parents are punished for trying to give children a good education, that is not as readily available as on offer in the south in the state sector. The policy should be abolished asap. It is wrong, it removing good education from northern parents and will do nothing for the state sector but increase pressure. uniadmissions.co.uk/application-gu…

Independent Schools Council
There are significant regional differences in independent school pupil numbers following the introduction of VAT on fees. The ISC Census found that Northern regions experienced a sharper fall in students than in London and the South East 📉
