Dare I say the last couple years have been PLUM WILD with tornado intercepts? Can’t wait to see what 2026 has in store for us! Drop your most insane tornado intercept in the comments! Shout out to @CirrusWeather for creating this video of a few of my past tornado intercepts!

What a HORRIBLE forecast by meteorologists – especially myself. Not only were we spectacularly wrong – we communicated poorly. It became apparent last night that some of our initial expectations would prove fallacious. I'd like to address what went wrong with our forecast:

I’m actually getting very annoyed with every new age chaser always attacking and going after the SPC for outlooks. Just because the last 3 years of chasing has been bonkers tornado wise doesn’t mean you are all forecasting geniuses. It’s not always as simple as a HRRR/RRFS run to show you a squall line and call it trash for putting a 10% hatch. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk

10 years ago today in West Monroe Louisiana. I was out in a canoe with bolt cutters freeing dogs from their chains and rescuing cats. Some progression photo of the same van and before and after on the bridge.

I have a family vacation planned to go to the mountains between March 5-8th, so I can guarantee you there will be a severe weather event since I can't chase. My luck with planning anything always backfires! Good news is I have ZERO plans for April-June! So ready for storm season!

When you say the word TORNADO to the public, they're not thinking about the QLCS process. They're not thinking of a spinup that breaks some limbs off trees, hurls leaves and tips over your shed. They're thinking of Joplin, they're thinking of Rolling Fork, etc etc. False alarm ratio is a thing. Complacency is a thing. That is why I don't believe we need 12 tornado warnings in a line to try and account for every possible brief ef-0 or ef-1 spinup. Two years ago NWS Chicago surveyed an EF-1 QLCS right over my uncle's house based off radar CC drops. Not a single person in the neighborhood had any damage. I asked, I patrolled every neighborhood group trying to find stuff (I grew up next to Midway Airport) The response was all the same. "What tornado, what? We just had some rain and 2 minutes of wind, everything is fine." IMO, thats not the perception to plant in people's minds of tornadoes. But this is a tricky situation, and as many have said, Damned if you do damned if you don't. Is the technical defection of a tornado met? Maybe in most cases...should the public take the time to get educated on this stuff? All us weather nerds would say yes....but thats not reality.

@CirrusWeather @BradArnoldWX While there WAS a false alarm problem in Joplin, that was not the main reason for the catastrophic death toll. The main reason was because of the unfortunate errors in the tornado warnings and siren use that afternoon.

As of right now, there were 7 tornadoes yesterday and last night with over 35+ tornado warnings. That is an >80% false alarm rate. I understand the opinion of “better safe than sorry”, but I also believe accuracy matters. The national weather services across the country have an extremely difficult job, but have done an incredible job at getting the false alarm rate down to about 50%.

For the love of God, stop tornado warning every single storm! Textbook example of cry wolf and why the general public doesn’t take tornado warnings seriously. Want to cut down on the false report rate with tornado warnings? Stop this insanity.
