Metro rail network in India as of Jan 2025 (Operational + Under construction only) Delhi with 400 km+ continues to be on par with global big cities. Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai will have around 200 km network in the coming few years.

This Part 3 is the conclusion of our public transport data and this data was the toughest to collate among all 3 (that says a lot). Please check our earlier posts on metro rail & bus network and follow/retweet us to spread and have conversations that matters for urban India.

In Part 3 of the public transport in Indian Cities, we cover the suburban rail network across all cities. The local/ electric train as it is fondly called is a heartbeat for the 3 colonial cities and also a major reason why traffic isn't bad as Bengaluru in these cities. 1/6

The most efficient bus networks globally have high fleet size, high frequency, affordable and good integration between other modes of transport. London, Paris, Singapore are great examples. India should move towards the same with increased funding and better planning.

In part 2 of public transport of Indian cities, we cover the most important network for a city - bus network. And the city bus fleet in India is just NOT ENOUGH. Global benchmark is at 800-1000 buses per million people but even the top ranking Indian city is at only half of it.

This is so surprising. Chennai has an extensive suburban rail network around 500kms ( which includes nearby districts if I am not wrong). So sure what is the core suburban kms covered . Inspite of that , they are planning a 100km+ metro rail network. Can you share the metro rail network+ suburban rail network of major Indian cities?

@_darkinfinity Apologies for the error. Pune should be in 9th rank and not 6th based on total network.

@Kadungaappi Yes, one for the future, getting suburban rail network within the city borders appears to be a challenge since all info pertains to overall network length which can be misleading. A challenge but can be done since only 3 cities- Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai have a good network.

@uniquemanhere Yes, but wanted to include only operational and under construction (near future) since lot of approved projects don't see the light or takes atleast 6-7 years to become reality/operational. Other notable approvals include Blr Phase 3, Hyd Phase 2, Delhi, Kolkata and Nagpur.
