When people say “physics has stagnated” they mean GR has not been analytically combined with QM, and that they know nothing about HEP, condensed matter, quantum computing, cosmology…

@martinmbauer Yes I meant all combinations of 3 quarks, choosing from the pool of 6 (or 12 including anti-quarks). Thank you for the answer!

The LHCb experiment just announced the discovery a new hadronic state. It has the same quantum numbers as a proton, but instead of up quarks it contains charm quarks This discovery contributes to a better understand the strong force that keeps quarks bound in nucleons

@ContraPoints As an Irish guy I find it weird the mayor of NYC is asked this, but it is during the Paddy’s Day parade so 🤷‍♂️ also his answer is just a good common sense one, I’m not sure why it’s classed as virtue signalling?

@flowidealism If you read John Bell’s words on Einstein vs. Bohr, you see how he appreciated the former’s clarity and precise exposition, vs. Bohr’s unclear ramblings, even if the latter is deemed more “correct” in his interpretations of QM. That’s due to this habit you mention.

Einstein's genius was not raw cognitive power. It was intellectual integrity. He was relentlessly honest about what he understood and what he did not. His definition of "simultaneity," leading to special relativity, is original but not complex. That is a specific habit, not a gift, and one most schools never cultivate. I am committed to developing this habit. Every day, I ask my students to identify what they understand and what they do not, in a reflective way, precise, sentence-by-sentence way. The student who says, "I understand the first half of this paragraph but not the second," is developing the habit of intellectual integrity. They are being scrupulous about the boundary between knowing and not knowing.

@flowidealism His EPR paper is often pulled as an example of him being “wrong”, but it’s a great example of integrity in skepticism. He was thinking more deeply about quantum correlations and causality than Bohr or his contemporaries were!

@picturesofnixon Part 3 (the movie) is Dune 2 (the book), I want to see Dune 3 where Leto exiles himself to the desert and starts his worm transformation, then marries his twin sister. The next 3500 are kinda boring relative to that!

They’re calling Dune Part Three the epic conclusion because they don’t have the courage to film part four where a giant man-worm smashes Momoa clones for 3500 years

Being Irish (and abroad, and online) on St. Patrick’s Day is weird. Closest I can describe it is that your office celebrates your birthday but no one else’s, and everyone says how they’re distantly related to you.

We spent the last few hours in midtown and it’s totally changed since NYC’s new ‘mayor’ took office. Like a ghost town but with a dangerous vibe. Twice someone came up behind us in an intimidating way. No cops in sight. Locals are not out and even tourists are thin on the ground as they can’t possibly feel safe. @BrianOSheaSPI

My sources state that there's been a massive spike in crime after the new mayor has taken over city hall . especially the midtown, south area. Sources state some in the mayor's office is trying to dictate how the commissioner runs the police department .

So many successful things have inefficiencies (why is English non-phonetic? Why does the US political system favour polarisation? Why do humans have small birth canals?) that I'm starting to think inefficiencies are necessary for success.

@Tomozaurus Easy to look at this and think the past had such extreme megafauna and megaflora. Then you realise that even larger animals and trees exist today, and you can go out and see them if you really want to.

I decided not to do a full new reconstruction at this time, but here is a quick and crude size comparison of the new specimens to an adult Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus hallorum for some perspective.

So a recent paper has confirmed that Araucaria delevoryasii (described from vegetation, seed & pollen cones) and Agathoxylon hoodii (petrified logs) from the Morrison Formation are the same plant. Here is my reconstruction done for Prehistoric Kingdom. Brief thread to follow.
