Seeing a lot of tweets that show people don’t realize everything Artemis 2 is doing, including calculating slingshot trajectories with no margin for error, was already done in 1968 and repeated multiple times afterward, including in 1970 when they had to recalculate and execute a new trajectory 150,000 miles from Earth with engines that weren’t designed for it because part of the spacecraft had exploded. All of this was done with computers that had 100,000 times less memory and 1,000 times less processing power than an iPhone. It’s great that it’s being done again, but the real mind blowing thing is that the exact same thing was done 58 years ago with far less technology.

"farther than ever before" is nonsense. Yes, it's farther from Earth -- but also farther from the Moon than any previous Moon mission. Getting close to the Moon, like orbiting it, is harder than simply going around the Moon. It's not a proud achievement but a disappointment.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman@NASAAdmin

Nominal translunar injection burn complete. The Artemis II crew is officially on the way to the Moon. America is back in the business of sending astronauts to the Moon. This time, farther than ever before.

I'm an orbitalmechanicslet so maybe a dumb question, but why did Artemis do its TLI all the way out to the side and not at perigee?

The level of trust in the technology by the NASA team is remarkable when you remember that the translunar injection burn must be just right to hit the exact spot where the Moon will be 4 days later, because if not, your spaceship cannot sustain you long enough to get home again.
NASA Artemis@NASAArtemis

Our Artemis II crew will be going around the Moon, but they'll always find their way back home 🌎 During this complex journey, the four astronauts will travel ~685,000 miles on a trajectory around the Moon and back to Earth. See their daily agenda: go.nasa.gov/4bw1ddt

I'll point out that people are responding with things like "it's an umami explosion" and "it tastes like brown bits in the pan after cooking a burger on the range" and "it tastes like cigarette butts" and NONE of this dissuades me. This might actually be a weird taste I like.

Trump devrait savoir que toute malveillance vis à vis de notre Président est une attaque portée contre la France. Quelque soit notre opinion quant au Président nous sommes les seuls à pouvoir le critiquer sans porter atteinte à notre nation.

Decided to watch some police body cams today.. Tiger Woods… hits a trailer in a residential area flips car sideways. Claims he looked down at his phone and bang. He’s Asked to do field sobriety test, Blows 0.00 and gets arrested for a DUI. Vince McMahon… drives over 100mph on the freeway, wrecks into a car. He’s Issued a misdemeanor citation for reckless driving. No breathalyzer, no sobriety test and no arrest. What do you think the difference is between the 2?

Almost no one, except millions of schoolchildren, because one of the astronauts was a teacher. There's a reason it's a generation X trauma more than any other. Not only were we watching live, we'd spent weeks doing "teacher in space" activities ahead of it, and some of us even dressed up that day. We literally shared classrooms so everyone could see it, gaslighting fuck.
Dave W Plummer@davepl1968

99.9% of people who "experienced" the Challenger disaster saw it on replay and now remember it as live. Almost NO ONE was watching. Everyone thinks they were. It's a fascinating collective false memory.

The moon has long been a shared locus of imagination and significance for Indigenous peoples. With the return of lunar missions, it is now a frontier for industry. Writer Michelle Cyca explores the economic and colonial logics shaping this transformation. thewalrus.ca/with-the-artem…
