The Bar Standards Board (BSB), the independent regulator of barristers in England and Wales, has requested a 12% increase in its annual budget for 2026–2027, citing rising operational costs and the need to strengthen regulatory oversight. The proposed budget rise, which would bring the BSB’s annual funding to approximately £29 million, is intended to support enhanced monitoring of professional standards, improve support for vulnerable clients, and expand resources for handling complaints and disciplinary cases. A significant portion of the increase would also go towards modernising IT systems and improving accessibility for barristers and the public. The BSB funds its operations through an annual fee levied on practising barristers, currently set at £292 per barrister. If approved, the fee would rise to around £327 — a move the BSB says is necessary to maintain robust regulation in a complex legal landscape. In a statement, the BSB emphasised its commitment to protecting the public and upholding the integrity of the Bar. “Our regulatory responsibilities continue to grow, and we must ensure we have the resources to act swiftly and effectively when standards fall short,” a spokesperson said. The proposal is subject to consultation and final approval by the Legal Services Board, the overarching regulator for legal services in England and Wales. Feedback from barristers and legal organisations will be considered before a final decision is made later this year. Critics have raised concerns about the financial pressure on self-employed barristers, many of whom are already facing economic challenges. However, the BSB maintains that a well-resourced regulator is essential to maintaining public trust in the justice system.

GOOD MORNING DAVID LAMMY Guess who’s back? Back again? It’s me. But. More pressingly. It’s 21% of courtrooms empty as 80,000 wait for trial & while you try to restrict jury trial for thousands. I’ve had enough of this. Shall we debate it? Name a broadcaster & format. I’m game.

📈Today, 9 April 2026, 106 out of the 516 Crown courtrooms in England & Wales will not be sitting. That's 21% of them. #courtstats #CS09042026 courtstats.co.uk

@joerichlaw @IainDale Waitrose and other stores must change policy, or spend more on proper security guards. This shop robbery epidemic has to be reversed with perpetrators being taught they can not get away with it...whoever they are.

The Gauleiters who now run Waitrose aren’t going to back down willingly now, @IainDale. An Employment Tribunal may ‘help’ them to reinstate him, but that will take money and legal expertise.
LBC@LBC

“To me, he’s a hero. To them, he’s nothing.” After a Waitrose employee of 17 years was reportedly sacked for stopping a shoplifter from stealing Easter eggs, @IainDale says it’s no wonder that the UK has a 'shoplifting crisis of epidemic proportions'.

🚨More than 3,200 lawyers including 300 top barristers and retired judges have called on the government to drop its plan to restrict the right to trial by jury. 30 organisations representing victims of violence against women and girls have written to the Justice Secretary urging him against curtailing the right to jury trials. Trial by jury is a cornerstone of our democracy and an essential safeguard against authoritarianism. The government has no mandate to restrict it - a move which will put us on a path toward authoritarian justice. But it’s not too late for the government to listen to the thousands of voices of victims, judges, barristers, other legal professionals and academics who oppose this blatant act of constitutional vandalism. CONTACT YOUR MP NOW and ask that they step up to protect this cherished and precious cornerstone of our democracy and essential safeguard against authoritarianism

This cannot be right. Those who uphold the law as they do their job should be protected. We are working on a change in the law to give good citizens like Walker Smith unambiguous protection. theguardian.com/business/2026/…

SACKED after 17 years… for stopping a thief. A Waitrose worker in Clapham Junction has lost his job after intervening to stop someone stealing Easter eggs. Walker Smith, 54, had given 17 years of service only to be shown the door for trying to do the right thing. No warning. No loyalty. Just gone. What message does that send to staff and to every other would be shoplifter wanting an easy target. Do your job… but don’t actually protect the business. Waitrose have ABSOLUTELY no loyalty to their staff they are quite happy to dispense of Loyal partners like yesterdays rubbish.

When Sarah Sackman asked a question she thought was a killer in the select committee, it exposed something about top down reforms. She essentially asked the chair of @TheCriminalBar if we knew Crown courts better than Sir Brian Levenson (& his report). We do. With respect. 1/?

That is the IT workhorse of running trials. It’s called the Crown Court Digital System and holds case papers. NOT the Common Platform which is largely to practitioners in the Crown Court a huge white elephant that cost the taxpayers millions…
Joanna Hardy-Susskind@Joanna__Hardy

The online system the Crown Courts use to run criminal cases is glitching. Some case documents randomly disappear. Some widely-shared messages from lawyers & judges revert to earlier versions. Notifications already dealt with reappear. Backlog: 80,000 cases. And counting. 🎪

Dear @MetPoliceUK, Below is a video of Zarah Sultana MP, inciting violence against British citizens at a rally in London. “We are the majority. We will defeat them… we will fight them in the streets.” Zarah must be investigated for the following criminal acts: >S.4 Public Order Act 1986 (provocation of violence) >SS.44-46 Serious Crime Act 2007 (encouraging or assisting crime) >S.1 Terrorism Act 2006 (publishing (or causing publication of) a statement, either intending encouragement or inducement or being reckless as to whether it will have that effect — for political or ideological purposes) I look forward to your investigation of Ms Sultana any criminal charges that may arise from her despicable conduct. This is a clear incitement of violence, for political and ideological purposes, against an immeasurable number of innocent British citizens. She is unfit for Parliament, and unfit for public office. Her hateful, dangerous, and wilfully divisive language as demonstrated below proves just that. Sincerely, The British Public
