People wishing death on Donald Trump is ugly and toxic. But trying to cancel or silence them for saying it completely misses the point of free speech.
Free speech doesn’t just protect polite opinions or things we agree with. It protects speech that is offensive, angry, and uncomfortable too. If we start punishing people simply for expressing a vile opinion, then free speech only exists for approved views.
You can condemn what someone says without trying to erase their ability to say it. That is the difference between defending free speech and trying to control it.
If someone saying something disgusting is enough to justify canceling them, then free speech isn’t a principle anymore. It is just a privilege granted to people who say the “right” things.
