BC Highway Patrol stopped a grey minivan near Merritt after it was clocked at 136 km/h in a 100 zone. Inside were nine people in an eight-seat vehicle, with only two wearing seatbelts and a child seat that had broken buckles. The driver, a 36-year-old Edmonton resident, told officers he was speeding because he was nearly out of gas—then the van ran dry at roadside. He was fined $472 for speeding, unbelted passengers, and an improperly secured child. Three other passengers also received seatbelt tickets, bringing total fines to just under $1,000. Police say the driver had to arrange both a taxi to bring fuel and transport the extra passenger.
