100 Dokkan hottakes from a day one player to commemorate the 10th anniversary AND flex that I've been playing longer than all of you. I've already got them so you have to hear them whether you like or not

@Cycloid84796235 @warty_dog @prerat The blender is still off. It only turns on if enough red people enter. The presence of the red people functionally increases the threat. If there are no red people or fewer than half then there is never any danger. Blues are counting on people not being murderers.

@dylanhendricks @warty_dog @prerat This suggests people spawn in the blender, they don't. They jump in the blender themselves hoping that others have done the same.

@warty_dog @prerat This suggests murder is happening by default before anyone pushes a button. That’s not the scenario. The blender is off, it only turns on if 50% of the people in it leave. Do you leave or stay?

@JohnDoe1498847 @waitbutwhy Actually the person running the experiment is using an automatically activated poison so killing him is the same as pressing the red button

@waitbutwhy So…you’re saying this won’t stop until we kill the person putting on this experiment - I’m sorry Tim, this has to end. We didn’t want to hurt anyone, but you’ve left us with no conditional hypotheticals.

This sums up why the blue/red button thing has caused such a ruckus. Like the white-gold/black-blue dress, it can be viewed through two different lenses, with each lens making one button seem obvious and the other seem unfathomable.
prerat@prerat

it was interesting that the comments for both of these were full of people saying "see everyone, this OBVIOUSLY clarifies the original problem!!!" not realizing the other poll with the opposite result existed too

@kaemi0273 @Lucastraman1 You're okay with society's money, time, and resourses being spent on 100,000 criminals with life sentences at the risk that 1 person *could* have been innocent? It's just not logical and we should not be setting up our justice system that way, sorry.

@luther_fac68363 @DustyRhodeHouse @patricktheheel No one is against people being released. Obviously Kairi is going to be released. Even if they sign her now, itll be for a short stint. But releasing someone while in the middle of a storyline is direspectful to the wrestler and anyone that takes the storylines seriously

@RomainHedouin @Aella_Girl @DanielleFong But the problem here is different: Urban specifically introduces non-trivial random voters (children/infirm) who at n/2 will vote blue. At that point, from a third party welfare perspective, blue is strongly dominant.

@Neuromante8 @jack_whitcomb_ I just kinda have faith that when the cards are truly down. People will work together for a common goal. Picking blue only makes sense if you don't trust people.

@Cycloid84796235 @jack_whitcomb_ "The only reason I have to turn back is because others have decided to stay." Yes, and you never know who will not run or who will vote blue. To save everyone 100% has to run or 50%+1 has to stay. You either believe everyone thinks equal or you just don't care about others.

I'm convinced this is just a poorly phrased question. If you pose it as: - Anyone who presses the red button lives no matter what. - Anyone who presses the blue button dies, unless > 50% of people also press the blue button. then it's clear that pressing the blue button is dumb.
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

@Neuromante8 @jack_whitcomb_ Or everyone can run. You see what I mean? The only reason I have to turn back is because others have decided to stay. If your apartment building is on fire you get out and you get your familiy out too. You don't go into the fire to save others

@Cycloid84796235 @jack_whitcomb_ That's an idealist view of the world, not necessarily realistic. Now imagine if your village is going to be attacked, you can always run and save yourself 100% of the time, or you can join the 50% and fight to save everyone, you'll never be sure how much people will stay anyway

@Cycloid84796235 @jack_whitcomb_ No, by pressing blue I'm just putting myself on the line, but with red you're risking other people's live. If the objective is 0 deaths, with red you require 100% coordination which is harder than 51% coordination.

@jack_whitcomb_ That just changes the perspective to a self centered view, as in "they died because they pressed the blue button" but it ignores the fact that by pressing the red button you are increasing the chance that the people that pressed blue will die.

@Lithium_CO3 @LinkofSunshine Wildly incorrect. A 99% accurate test means it will be accurate for 99% of the population, not that it will be 99% accurate for each individual.

The most worrying poll I’ve ever seen is one when they asked doctors “1% of the population had disease X. The test has a 99% accuracy rate. If someone tests positive for disease X, what are the odds they’re have disease X” And like 95% of doctors said ~99%. This is their job.

We did the red/blue voting thing and everyone else voted and now it's your turn. The vote tallies are suddenly revealed to you and the vote is exactly 50/50. If you vote blue everyone lives, if you vote red all the people who voted blue die. How do you vote?
