The Celtic phenotype (pale skin, freckles, red hair, light eyes) took thousands of years on isolated rainy islands to form. Ireland is its main reservoir. Ireland now has the highest immigration rate in its history. we must protect it at all costs.

I was a bit hesitant about showing stuff like this just a month ago 😅 When we started showcasing real-time AI + SDF sculpting, I was afraid professionals would laugh if I showed no effort on the input models. The shape strength slider was also hidden in our first iteration, so I had no choice but to at least try and knock some more interesting shapes together. Now that we're starting to focus on more powerful features and shape strength is finally unlocked, I'm starting to appreciate just playing with simple shapes. Different stages of production have different needs. Sometimes you want full authoring over your creations, while other times you just want to quickly explore new ideas.

Musk's lawyer: "Are you completely trustworthy?" Altman: "I believe so." Musk's lawyer: "But, you know, you don't know whether you're completely trustworthy." Altman: "I'll just amend my answer to yes." Musk's lawyer: "Should the jury believe your testimony?" Altman: "I think that's up to them, but I believe so." Musk's lawyer: "You believe so, or they should?" Altman: "Sir, I'm not gonna tell the jury what to think." Musk's lawyer: "Do you always tell the truth?" Altman: "I believe I'm a truthful person." Musk's lawyer: "It wasn't my question. Do you always tell the truth?" Altman: "I'm sure there is some time in my life when I have not." Musk's lawyer: "Have you told lies to advance your business interests?" Altman: "Uh, no." Musk's lawyer: "Have you misled people with whom you do business?" Altman: "I believe I am an honest and trustworthy business person." Musk's lawyer: "That wasn't my question, what you believe. Have you misled people with whom you do business?" Altman: "I do not think so." Musk's lawyer: "Would they think so?" Altman: "I can't answer that for other people." That was the opening of Sam Altman's cross-examination this morning.

This is what it sounds like living next to a data center. The video below was recorded at midnight, and the data center is situated next to 100s of residential homes.

what is the female equivalent of being short as a male? if you say being fat or skinny im going to put you in solitary confinement for the rest of your life because not weighing enough or weighing too much can be fixed fairly simply, never said easily just simply.

It's fake in that it's a looser approximation of the reflection than ray tracing. Both are really just approximations, of course, but Ray tracing is more physically accurate to how light behaves, just with far fewer rays than real photons. There's a time and place for SSR too. It's just another tool in the programmer's kit.

@CygnusSlaughter @GameStalgiaX Isn’t that just one of many methods for imitating reflections? What makes it “fake”? I’d argue it’s way, way better than the screen space reflections you see everywhere today

There's nothing wrong with the effect they used here. This is a good cheap way to do reflections, but it only works if the mirror surface is a flat plane. Ray traced reflections work on any shape, so you could have as many curved surfaces as you want and the effect doesn't break. It's also just more physically accurate, higher res, you can do multiple light bounces and other effects. It just looks better. Render to texture also tends to produce a lot of noise and aliasing when viewing at extreme angles.

@DaschX13 @GameStalgiaX If they could do real time Ray traced reflections back then, they may have.

@CygnusSlaughter @GameStalgiaX And somehow doing that, or even running a replica of the entire map behind a barrier/glass to act as a mirror wouldn't take a massive toll to resources as our current "accurate and real" ray-traced reflections.

There are benign monopolies, like Steam, earned by companies that deliver the most innovation, highest quality, and best prices. They dominate because customers choose them — Steam became the leading PC gaming platform through better features, frequent sales, and convenience, with no government protection. Bad monopolies, by contrast, are usually shielded from competition by government policy. They can persist for decades, raise prices, and stifle innovation because legal barriers prevent rivals from entering the market.

@MattBraynard Oh ok, so because nothing lasts forever therefore monopolies can’t form? If it has to outlast the heat death of the universe, then nothing exists. If lasting for decades counts, then monopolies form all the time.

This is her dumbest take. Monopolies form naturally. Monopolies are much more profitable than competitive industries. So if you find yourself in a competitive industry, it makes sense to buy out or collude with all your competitors, or to temporarily take a loss in order to drive them out of business. The government itself is a naturally-forming monopoly on violence. Ayn Rand is frequently guilty of this kind of magical thinking in which everything would be perfect if the government just disappeared. Well, there are still large parts of Africa today in which there is effectively no government. Is it utopia? Meanwhile the Industrial Revolution could not have taken place without the financial incentives put in place by intellectual property law such as patents, which require an incredibly strong government to enforce. The right really needs to get away from this whole “everything the government does is bad” loser mindset.
Sowell Economics@sowelleconomics

Ayn Rand: "Under a free system, no one could acquire a monopoly on anything. If you look at economics, and economic history, you will discover that all monopolies have been established with government help."
