Regarding the Genesis music - one (long-term) goal of this project is to allow seamlessly switching between the Saturn and Genesis versions via button press. E.g. pressing the ‘SELECT’ button during gameplay would instantly swap out tiles, sprites and music. This feature would require the user to supply their own copies of both versions. And I didn’t even think of analog stick support, that’s a great idea!!

@TheOneMrMatt When it's finished, does that mean it will be possible to make a mod to add high-quality Genesis music and real analog move?

Showing off some current progress with the (Saturn) Sonic 3D Blast port, from launching the game and playing to the end of Green Grove Zone Act 1. The first level is now completable with a few issues left to fix. Some notes: - This port natively plays the (Duck TrueMotion 1-encoded) FMVs exactly as they do on the Saturn with no quality loss. - Game sound effects are accurate to the Saturn as this port reimplements the Saturn's SCSP sound driver. - The main menu after the title screen is (mostly) implemented. - Badnik, flicky, and other entity behavior is much more accurate now. - Various sprite / tile layering issues fixed - Multiple sound effects can be played simultaneously, like on Saturn - there was an issue where only one sound could be played at a time. There are still a number of issues (some missing sound effects, some entity behavior bugs, 'LOADING' screens showing at the wrong points, the act-end sequence with the mesh light beam carrying Sonic away is not quite there yet, etc...), and the remaining levels still need a LOT of work...

@GrandGizzard Wow, I didn’t know Sonic R’s PC version shipped with no music or save support! I wish SEGA took more care with keeping those PC ports consistent! Always found it odd they kept rereleasing the Genesis S3D Blast and never gave any love to the Saturn version.

@TheOneMrMatt And Sonic Gems Collection was when I learned that Sonic R ACTUALLY was supposed to have music 😂 and that your progress was supposed to save (the PC version didn’t save; at least not my copy, so I had to playthrough everything all over again every time I started the game) 💀

@ChrisStaplesTst Currently, just on my Windows PC. The current build targets PC, but it can be easily ported to other platforms. I’ll release the source (when everything is implemented, accurate and stable) so that other devs can port it to their platform(s) of choice.

@schmoop5407 The official PC port is not a great port of the Saturn version - audio / FMV quality is lower, the PC Special Stages are very different and NOT GREAT, there are missing VDP2 effects and various odds and ends that are inconsistent with the Saturn version.

Yes! I’m reverse-engineering the Saturn version (from its SH2 code) to make a faithful PC port of it. The codebase is a C++ project that renders everything in software and uses SDL for input, window management, etc. While it currently targets PC, it can be easily ported to other platforms. I will release the source on GitHub when it’s in a good, stable 1.0 state.
