@MichaelPTKelly Offer a eulogy at the very start, before the entrance song. That way it’s not during the “rite.” Problem solved. And oh yeah, keep it under ten minutes.

A eulogy is *not* part of the Catholic funeral rites. Sometimes priests make exceptions, they should not INHO. They are rarely - very rarely - done well, and people ought to keep stories that mean a lot to them for the wake. Funerals are to pray for the dead.

When I was in grammar school and high school, it was extremely rare for any teacher to make any reference to their personal lives. The only clue to teachers’ lives outside the classroom were the honorifics “Miss” and “Mrs,” which told you whether the teacher was married, and of course there were no such clues for male teachers. With one possible exception, I don’t recall any professor or lecturer ever talking about their personal lives, their political beliefs, their sexual orientation, or anything other than the course topic during the four years that I was in college (University of Pennsylvania, 1963-1967). (The one exception was a sociology course taught by a lecturer, who made repeated references to being from Walnut Creek, CA – references that meant nothing to me since I had never heard of Walnut Creek.) When I read online about the things that teachers at all levels now “share” with their students, I am reminded of the truth of the line, “The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.”

The more I read British fiction, the more I recognize from where Julian Fellowes borrowed. His 2001 film, “Gosford Park” includes the idea of an American guest and his fake butler visiting a manor house. This idea comes from PG Wodehouse’s 1919 comedic novel “Something Fresh.”

Every public high school in America should be teaching how credit cards work, how to get a mortgage, and what mutual funds are and how they function. 16th century English literature is great, but how about equipping our children with what they need in the REAL world.

The incredible opening shot from Dead End (1937) blends miniature effects, forced perspective and clever editing — and nearly 90 years later, it still looks fantastic.

@nguyenhdi The Friar and the nurse are responsible for the tragedy in this play. Teenagers will make terrible decisions, of course. That’s why they need adults to guide them. Nurse and Friar fail their duty as the adults in the room.

Now that I've reread "Romeo & Juliet", I do find Friar Lawrence disturbing or at least irresponsible, but it is absurd that some people would think Romeo is sinister or the play is a warning against love at first sight or that it's a story of child abuse.

Drawing on Pope Leo’s apostolic exhortation Dilexi Te, Nate Cortas SJ reflects that welcoming migrants isn't a political preference but a Gospel demand. In the stranger at our door Christians encounter the living presence of Jesus Himself. Read here: buff.ly/zIllDMa

This is one of the worst downgrades of all time Old London Bridge was a medieval stone structure that stood for over 600 years and was once considered a wonder of the world. It was 926 feet long and filled with houses and shops, making it the longest inhabited bridge in Europe.

@BarryPierce Yes, he is depressing, but I think Hardy is the best of all British novelists. The novels are spiritual and philosophical, written with poetic beauty and masterfully crafted plots. I have taught Tess in my eleventh grade British Lit class on and off for 15 years.

decided to start the year’s reading with Jude the Obscure, because I haven’t read a Hardy since my teens, and I think this might be the most relentlessly bleak novel I’ve ever read. I feel its utter nihilism is really unmatched in British literature at the time. What was he on?

I wish people would stop saying that. 5000 books/60 years is only 83 books per year, which is fewer than 2 books per week. Voracious reading is not a mere 2 books per week. I used to average more than 5. I'm currently averaging about 3.
Boze Herrington, Library Owl 😴🧙‍♀️@SketchesbyBoze

@SpencerKlavan Even a voracious reader will only read four to five thousand books in a lifetime, so we must read as much as we can while we're here.

The Free Press is one of the least curious media outlets on earth. Every article is a collection of anecdotes that adds up to their priors. Almost no new info or reporting that would challenge their audience. If you fell for Weiss’s edgy journo act it’s likely bc you wanted to. It’s not bc of the work

I posted about reading Middlemarch and ppl were in my DMs like “why are you doing this to yourself?”. And while Middlemarch isn’t always funny, and is primarily about characters who make infuriating choices, almost every other line in the book is a quotable quote
