📢 NEW PUBLICATION ALERT “Recycled Trauma: Why Borno’s IDP Camp Closures Put Returnees in Harm’s Way”, by Dataphyte Foundation, examines how insecurity, repeated attacks, weak livelihood support, and fragile protection systems continue to endanger returnees across Borno State. The policy brief highlights why durable solutions to displacement must go beyond relocation targets and prioritise safety, dignity, and long-term protection for displaced populations. Since the days of the 1861 Hausa Constabulary, Nigeria has relied on a "unitary" model that often drops an officer into a terrain where they don't speak the language, don't know the shortcuts, and don't understand the local customs. How can you gather intelligence if you can't have a conversation with the market woman? How can you spot a threat if you don't know what "normal" looks like in that specific village? We hope that the IGP’s new framework for State Police acknowledges a fundamental truth by ensuring that Effective policing is 90% information and 10% enforcement. By moving toward state-led forces, we ensure that the people protecting the community are of the community. Intelligence flows where trust exists, and trust exists where there is common ground. Since Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999, election costs have risen sharply from ₦32 billion in 1999 to over ₦355 billion in 2023. Ahead of 2027, the Independent National Electoral Commission has proposed ₦873.78 billion for the next general elections, a 145% increase from 2023. A review by Dataphyte shows that over ₦900 billion has already been spent across seven election cycles since 1999. Read the article: dataphyte.com/topic/election…

For decades, Nigerian universities have shaped generations of innovators and entrepreneurs. But today, student entrepreneurship is no longer just about passion; it has become a means of survival. From tech services to fashion, photography, and food businesses, students now depend on entrepreneurship to stay afloat in a harsh economy. Yet one challenge continues to limit their growth: Nigeria’s persistent electricity crisis. In this latest edition of #PolicyPoint, the author examines how electricity policy affects universities’ capacity to support student entrepreneurship, innovation, and productivity. This publication is part of a continuing Policy Point series exploring key socio-economic and governance issues through practical policy recommendations. Ahead of 2027, the APC now controls 31 of Nigeria’s 36 states following recent defections. But Dataphyte’s analysis of elections from 1999 to 2023 shows that governorship dominance no longer guarantees presidential victory. In 2023, the Labour Party won 11 states despite controlling no state government before the election. Public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process continues to decline. The Electoral Integrity Perception Index dropped from 53 points in 2015 to 43 points in 2024. As Nigeria’s digital population grows, the absence of information on Ekiti governorship candidates on INEC’s website raises fresh concerns about accountability and democratic transparency. Ebola disease cases have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, with patients experiencing classic symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, severe weakness, abdominal pain, nosebleeds, and bloody vomiting. Although no Ebola case has been recorded in Nigeria, concerns remain over the risk of possible cross-border transmission due to population movement across West and Central Africa. @WHO @WHONigeria @AfricaCDC @NCDCgov @UNICEFNigeria @MinOfHealthUG @MinSanteRDC @WHOAFRO @_AfricanUnion @NigeriaGov #Ebola #PublicHealth #DiseaseSurveillance #AfricaHealth #HealthSecurity

INEC scored 36/100 in the 2024 Freedom of Information ranking, reflecting persistent transparency concerns around public access to electoral information. Now, with the Ekiti governorship election approaching, candidate details remain unavailable on the commission’s portal, limiting voters’ ability to make informed choices. Violent attacks have remained a persistent security challenge in Nigeria, with fatalities concentrated largely in the northern regions. The recent attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have further raised concerns about the spread and persistence of insecurity beyond traditional conflict hotspots. #Nigeria #Insecurity #SecurityWatch #DataStorytelling #ConflictTracking #Dataphyte

I love being a documentary and storytelling photographer! It was one of those days in Ibadan while I was a UI student, hunting stories and "documenting today for the future", I never knew I caught @UnkleAyo with my lens during the June 12 protest circa 2021.
👑S.A.L.A.K.O🕊@UnkleAyo

It should concern you that someone "abroad" still laments passionately about the state of the nation more than you living with it daily I have always walked my talk. @nimiadeyemo_ took these pictures of me driving the charge at the Ibadan June 12 protest. I am not your mate.

For years, biodiversity stories in Nigeria have been visible, but they often stop at the surface. At Dataphyte Foundation, we reviewed how the media has reported these issues over the past ten years and found a clear gap: many stories are reactive, not backed by data, and rarely push for accountability. Yet biodiversity loss affects everyday life, from food and livelihoods to climate and local economies, so this gap cannot be ignored. To respond, we went a step further. We trained and commissioned 10 investigative journalists across Nigeria to produce data-driven biodiversity stories that connect the environment to people, policy, and real impact. From that process, we didn’t just get stories, we built a practical guide to help journalists do this work better. The Biodiversity Media Reporting Toolkit by Dataphyte Foundation is designed to help journalists go deeper, use data more effectively, and report in ways that can drive real change. 📍 Coming soon. Follow @Dataphytefdn and stay tuned for the release.

Yesterday, Our team in collaboration with @Spaces4Change , and other partners under the People-Centered Public Safety (PCPS) project was in Bayelsa to train Data Enumerators for the People-Centered Safety and Security Perception Survey, a key component of the Open Society Foundation (OSF)-supported PCPS project. The research seeks to understand community perceptions on safety and security in Bayelsa and Benue States, while amplifying citizen-led intelligence to strengthen evidence-driven policies and programs. As part of this effort, enumerators will be deployed across 21 communities in 3 LGA in Bayelsa states, with additional coverage planned for Benue State. During the training, our Programmes Manager, Abdulahi Adebayo (@Abdek_SDGs) led sessions on the Ethics and principles of research and data collection, Household and respondent sampling techniques, Community entry protocols, and Data quality and safety standards. He also emphasized the critical importance of obtaining informed consent and upholding the rights and protection of all respondents.

Today, some of our team members (@Prof_KennyJames, @Khadija_theK, @DanielOlayinkaS) were at the Daily Trust Foundation (@Daily_TrustF) to train journalists and editors on how to better understand their audiences, strengthen reporting with data, and improve verification practices. The session focused on three areas: audience analytics and engagement, data and investigative journalism, and the use of digital tools for fact-checking. Participants learned how to track and understand audience behaviour, use data to uncover and deepen stories, and apply verification tools to check the accuracy of information before publication. The training focused on practical exercises, giving participants tools they can use directly in their newsrooms to improve the quality and credibility of their reporting.

The push for state policing in Nigeria is already underway but the real question is: will it be built on data and will people on the ground be involved? In every state across the six geopolitical regions, insecurity in Nigeria is happening at the community level. The crimes and the inadequacy of resources to police them is hyperlocal, and any policing intervention that doesn't start at the community level risks becoming another well-funded white elephant. As the federal government deepens its commitment to state police and state governments begin making infrastructure investment decisions, two critical gaps deserve attention: 🔹 Service gaps — what policing needs actually exist on the ground today? 🔹 Accessibility — beyond police-citizen trust issues, are police services even reachable at the local government and community levels? As you will see in the map below, security tension is heightened at the community and local government levels across the country, and it is most acute where data and community voices are most absent. This is exactly why at @GolokaAnalytics, we are deploying hyperlocal tech and data infrastructure to put citizens at the centre of safety solutions, because the people closest to the problem should be powering the data that solves it. We believe safe communities are built from the ground up, not the top down. And we believe no government, federal or state, should make policing investment decisions without recourse to data. Do you want to be part of the solution? We are inviting citizens to participate in shaping people-centred, accessible policing at the local and state levels in Nigeria.
