Had an important conversation with leaders of the Iranian diaspora in Australia, representing a community of around 90,000 who oppose the ayatollah regime and support efforts to weaken it and advance a democratic alternative. I briefed them on the Iranian threat and the IDF’s actions against Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and thanked them for their strong support for Israel and the Jewish community in Australia. @IsraelinOZ

Spoke with Australia’s FM @SenatorWong. We discussed at length developments in the war in Iran and Lebanon. I emphasized the massive scale of missile, rocket, and drone attacks against Israel from Lebanon. Israel is acting to defend its communities and citizens. I described the reality of life these days in our northern communities, to which residents returned after over a year in which they didn't live in their homes. Most international media outlets are currently portraying the situation on only one side of the border. Unfortunately, the Lebanese government is not taking practical steps against Hezbollah, neither to stop the attacks on Israeli civilians, nor in other contexts. I welcomed the arrival of Australia’s new ambassador to Israel, Neil Hawkins, and expressed my gratitude for the swift acceptance of the credentials of our ambassador in Canberra, @Hillel_Newman.

In Sydney, Israeli President Isaac Herzog (@Isaac_Herzog) spoke directly to the pain felt by Australia’s Jewish community – linking the Bondi terror attack to a global surge in antisemitism unleashed after the October 7 massacre. From chants and firebombings to boycotts, threats and the deafening silence of former friends, he warned that this is what it looks like when hatred is normalised – when antisemitism is excused, minimised, or ignored. Quoting Elie Wiesel, President Herzog reminded the crowd that silence and indifference are never neutral acts. That is why he came. To stand with the community. To strengthen it. Here at Bondi Beach in Sydney, the scene of the horrific antisemitic terror attack at a Chanukah celebration in December, I begin my official visit to Australia at the invitation of Governor-General Sam Mostyn, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and the Australian Jewish community. On behalf of the State of Israel, I pay tribute to all 15 victims murdered in the deadliest terror attack in Australian history. From here at Bondi, I embrace the bereaved families, pray for a speedy recovery for all those injured, and express my deepest gratitude to all those heroes who saved innocent lives under fire. Standing here at Bondi - an iconic symbol of Australian life, now scarred by the December 14th massacre - I embrace our Australian Jewish sisters and brothers still reeling from this trauma. I also reach out to the wonderful people of Australia who have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Australian Jews in the aftermath of the attack.  My visit to Australia, to all of you, is one of solidarity, strength, and sincere friendship from the State of Israel and the people of Israel. Together, we must confront the evils of antisemitism, extremism, and terror here in Australia and around the world.
