Investment fraud is designed to look like a great opportunity, but it often leads to devastating financial loss. Scammers promise unusually high returns, then disappear with your money. Common investment scams include cryptocurrency or Ponzi schemes, “pump and dump” stock scams, and many more. 🚩 Red flags to watch for: • Unsolicited investment offers — even from friends or family • Promises of higher-than-normal returns • High-pressure tactics to invest quickly • Requests to pay in cryptocurrency • Links to unfamiliar or fake investment websites Before investing, take the time to verify the opportunity. Don’t rely on the contact information provided in unsolicited materials. Research the company independently and check with your provincial securities regulator for warnings or fraud alerts. If an investment sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Learn more: bit.ly/4dmahCR #PreventFraud

#VPDNews: The decision to grant the VPD Police Academy represents a significant milestone for public safety in Vancouver and across the Province. The creation of the VPD Police Academy marks a major step forward. This will strengthen the department’s ability to recruit, train, and prepare the next generation of police officers for the City of Vancouver. “The VPD Police Academy is intended to enhance the essential work of the Justice Institute of British Columbia, helping ensure future police officers are prepared for the evolving demands of modern policing,” said Vancouver Police Chief Constable Steve Rai. “The JIBC will remain an important institution for police education in British Columbia.” “This moment has been years in the making,” said Chief Constable Rai. “It reflects years of planning, advocacy, and collaboration driven by a shared commitment to building a safer Vancouver and a safer Province.” On behalf the VPD, we would like to thank the Province, Mayor Ken Sim, our City Councillors and the Vancouver Police Board who continue to support and recognize the extraordinary public safety pressures the City of Vancouver faces. “Public safety is the foundation of a thriving city,” added Chief Constable Rai. “This investment will prepare the officers who will serve the City of Vancouver for decades to come.”

#VPDNews: The Vancouver Police Department announced today the creation of the Vancouver Police Training Academy - Centre of Excellence in the Woodward’s building at 351 Abbott Street. “The issue of municipal police training in B.C. was first raised in 2017,” said Chief Constable Steve Rai. “Nearly a decade later, the core challenges remain.” He noted that the current Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) Police Academy model still does not meet Vancouver’s complex policing needs. “Several formal reviews of the JIBC Police Academy have highlighted the issues we’re talking about (We Must Do Better: Best Practices Review of Municipal Police Training in British Columbia and Municipal Police Training in British Columbia – Needs Assessment). The Province invited submissions for municipal police departments to run their own satellite police academies. We’ve been waiting for the Province’s decision for almost five months.” Although the JIBC has increased its recruit cohort size, Chief Constable Rai emphasized that the expansion remains far below the VPD’s training demand. As a result, the VPD continues to provide extensive remedial training, including approximately eight weeks of combined pre‑ and post‑academy instruction for every new recruit. Contemporary policing requires specialized skills, advanced scenario-based learning, and expanded instructional capacity. The Vancouver Police Training Academy will provide advanced training for currently serving VPD officers and will also bridge the gap to prepare recent recruit graduates for policing in Vancouver. The location of the new academy was specifically chosen to bring greater police presence to the surrounding area. “We chose the Woodward’s site to reinforce our commitment to the Downtown Eastside community. The VPD is part of this community and we want our training to reflect that commitment,” said Chief Constable Rai. “Residents and businesses across Vancouver have been clear: they want stability, predictability, and to feel safe,” said Mayor Ken Sim. “Locating this new training academy in the Woodward’s complex will help anchor daily activity and presence in the heart of our city, contributing to safety, stability, and long-term renewal in Gastown and the surrounding communities.” The Vancouver Police Training Academy - Centre of Excellence is a practical, scalable, long-term solution. It will address identified deficiencies, align with provincial certification requirements, and reflect Vancouver’s unique policing environment. “The people of Vancouver deserve a police service that is thoroughly prepared, well-trained, and ready for the challenges of today and tomorrow,” said Chief Constable Rai. “This Centre of Excellence reinforces our commitment to public safety, now and into the future.”

The Downtown Community Policing Center partnered w/ Downtown Van, Amazon, & several neighborhood stakeholders to assemble warming kits for our community. Throughout the winter months, we’ll be out on foot patrols across the downtown core distributing these kits to those in need.
Downtown Van@downtownvan

Last Friday, our partners from across the city came together to assemble 500 warming kits for the vulnerable members of our communities. This initiative brought together colleagues of the Downtown Van team, Amazon, the @DowntownCPC and representatives from seven BIAs. We’re deeply grateful to @amazon for their generous support, which made this initiative possible, and to our community partners for demonstrating what can be achieved through collaboration.

Thank you to all #VPD officers and staff, both on the frontlines and behind the scenes, for your efforts in keeping the community safe during this weekend’s upcoming protests.
Vancouver Police@VancouverPD

#VPDNews: Vancouver Police are deploying additional officers to maintain order this weekend, in anticipation of increased protest activity throughout the city. “Everyone has a right to gather lawfully and to peacefully express themselves,” says Sergeant Steve Addison. “Our officers will have a visible presence at protests and gathering spots throughout the city to ensure everyone’s safety. We hope people will respect each others’ points of view and rights to express themselves, even if they don’t agree.” Approximately 6,000 people gathered at various locations in the city last weekend to protest various geo-political issues, including the uprising in Tehran, the war in Gaza, and conflicts in the United States. While the majority of protesters were peaceful, VPD officers had to physically separate some groups outside the Vancouver Art Gallery to avoid physical conflicts. Police expect the size and number of protests to increase this weekend, and will be deploying extra officers on foot and on bikes, and those who are specially trained to manage large crowds. Currently, more than 130 officers are scheduled to be deployed for 11 planned protests, which are expected to draw thousands of people to the downtown core throughout the weekend. “Our objective is to maintain order, provide a safe environment for peaceful gatherings, and to minimize disruptions for people who are not involved in the demonstrations,” says Sergeant Addison.
