Dr. Saeed Ahmed@DrSaeedIMF·
I am excited (and nervous) to share that my book, The Shady Economics of International Aid, has now officially been released and is out in the world! This work is the culmination of extensive research and first-hand professional experience at the IMF, State Bank of Pakistan, and the civil service. It offers an evidence-based critique of the $200 billion international aid and development industry, exposing how donor-driven agendas—often lacking accountability and meaningful success metrics—frequently result in the misallocation and misuse of taxpayer funds, to the detriment of both donor and recipient countries. Pakistan serves as the starting point, but the argument goes far beyond. I resigned from the IMF and SBP two years ago to dedicate myself to writing this book. It has been a labour of purpose and passion. It has also been a long and introspective process of research and writing. This is an effort grounded in what I’ve lived, seen, and questioned. By writing this book, I have tried to give back to the nation that shaped me. The revelations in this book might seem distasteful—even bitter—to many of my friends and colleagues with whom I have worked around the world. Nothing in the book is intended to express disdain toward any person; instead, the book is about the failures of the international aid system. The book brings research-based arguments, cuts through misinformation, and helps people take a pause, with the aim to spark a much-needed conversation. The book is both a critique and call to action. My hope is that this book will inspire all involved to make changes that truly benefit the hundreds of millions of people around the world who are burdened by a shady international economic system. More details about the book can be found here: 🔗upriverpress.com/home/the-shady… I’d love for all of you to read this book and let me know what you think. #Pakistan #USAID #development #WorldBank #ADB #UK @realDonaldTrump @POTUS @marcorubio @SecRubio @DavidLammy @JaneMarriottUK @CMShehbaz @PTIofficial @ImranKhanPTI @najamsethi

So Islamabad’s top spots are no longer in F6 as Kohsar was ruined by category C politicians & their chamchas so best avoided. Parking because of the dala culture is horrendous. I strongly recommend the New Blue Area. You could forget you are in Pakistan. So trendy sandwiches & death by desserts in DC style delis with a new skyline. Now that Gen Z vibe you can’t get in Khi.

Islamabad used to be a joke. A city of bureaucrats and embassies where the best meal was a kebab roll from a roadside stall and the only cuisine was whatever the diplomatic wives had taught their cooks. That is no longer true.

@DrSaeedIMF @TurgayEvren1 Looking at the current state of Pakistan you could expect a holiday or a shutdown on any given day. There is neither law nor justice here. What do you have to say about this?

Miftah Ismail: "So now Pakistanis are paying about Rs 120 in custom duties and taxes on every litre of petrol and Rs 60 on every litre of diesel. The Pakistani people will therefore pay, and our govt will earn, Rs 180 bn of duties, taxes and levies on selling petrol and diesel this month. This sacrifice by the people allows one govt to buy a luxury new jet for billions, another to increase the cost of an unfinished (for 15 years!) water pipeline project from Rs 40 billion to Rs 400 billion and yet another govt to give 25 crore (Rs 43 bn in total) to each govt MNA to spend in his constituency." The continued rent-seeking and abuse of powers leaves little justification for taxes on petroleum products. The prices of petroleum products are highest in the region and have been raised by the highest percentage compared to South Asian countries. The rise is highly inflationary and is a regressive tax on vast majority of the people. It is completely avoidable if the government chooses to collect taxes from the wealthy but it does not. The IMF excuse is flimsy and does not hold given all the facts. @MiftahIsmail
Miftah Ismail@MiftahIsmail

Government last night increased the price of petrol by Rs 6.51 and diesel by Rs 19.39. Now the cost of both is about Rs 400 per litre. In setting the new price, the govt decreased tax (levy) on petrol by Rs 3.88. But it also increased the tax (levy) on diesel by Rs 28.69 per litre. So now Pakistanis are paying about Rs 120 in custom duties and taxes on every litre of petrol and Rs 60 on every litre of diesel. The Pakistani people will therefore pay, and our govt will earn, Rs 180 bn of duties, taxes and levies on selling petrol and diesel this month. This sacrifice by the people allows one govt to buy a luxury new jet for billions, another to increase the cost of an unfinished (for 15 years!) water pipeline project from Rs 40 billion to Rs 400 billion and yet another govt to give 25 crore (Rs 43 bn in total) to each govt MNA to spend in his constituency. The govt will ask you for more sacrifices next month!

@MWFaithOfficial 1. What is the source of this data? 2. Even if accurate, absolute numbers alone are not meaningful. 3. Mosques per 1000 Muslims, and mosques per sq.km would probably show more interesting comparisons.

"While the Saudi intervention eased the immediate pressure, the UAE’s recall of deposits laid bare a deeper reality: Pakistan’s resilience remains heavily contingent on its partners’ goodwill rather than internal strength. It may be recalled that when the SIFC was established, it pledged to attract $100bn in investment from the GCC countries — an ambition yet to materialise. More importantly, the recent episode exposed the illusion of IMF-supported stabilisation. It raises a fundamental question: what have three back-to-back IMF programmes since 2019 delivered in terms of resilient economic security?" dawn.com/news/1994871

Between 2000 and 2025, Pakistan's average tax collection was about 9pc of GDP. Had Pakistan raised even 15pc, the lower range for comparable economies, it could have generated an additional Rs45 trillion (about $357 billion when using annual avg. exchange rates over the period).

My new op-ed in DAWN: External support may avert a crisis, but it cannot build resilience. Weak domestic governance has produced a dependent foreign policy. Pakistan must strengthen its internal capacity. dawn.com/news/amp/19948…@Dawn_News
