@educator4ever36 I thought that was what you meant. I completely agree. It’s industry wide - whatever they have to donto get them across the stage. Many student’s don’t even know they can get a job and drop out at 16.

Once again for those in the back - TEACHERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO FAIL OR RETAIN STUDENTS.
Lenny@NoSpinZoneX

@educator4ever36 I have been a teacher. Parents share responsibility, but schools also need to stop passing kids along who can’t read or do basic math.

@educator4ever36 @tiredmommy1010 Yeah, but the pressure and subsequent harassment in NY schools is real. Graduation rates, as ridiculous a metric as they are, drive poor decisions and politics.

Here’s an idea! 💡💡💡 Elementary School: PreK 4 through Year 6 with PreK optional. Secondary School: Years 7-10 Post Secondary: Trade School, Community College or a 4 year College/University. Students not on grade level after 10th which would be the close equivalent of trad high school minus fluff classes, free access to any classes they need until the age of 19 if continuously enrolled.

"What do you mean you can cover all of middle school in 8-9 months?!" Yes, you can - and in about 2-3 hours per day. This should tell you how much time in wasted in brick & mortar government schools. Homeschooling is efficient. Want to know more? Read our book, link in profile

Still hear this justification re: AI in classrooms: “It’s out there & we can't be left behind.” Friendly challenge: which happens more often? 1. Schools regretted waiting too long to adopt a technology. 2. Schools regretted adopting a technology before they knew how to use it.

Do schools kill creativity?” It’s a seductive story. But creativity isn’t a free-floating spark waiting to be protected from schooling. It grows from knowledge, constraint, revision and judgement. Far from killing creativity, schools breathe life into it. Link below ⬇️

Have I mentioned how great @greg_ashman is? “It is common for people to think about math teaching for a few minutes & decide that it should focus on things they think are important, but that's no way to design a curriculum..little kids don't need lectures about credit card debt”

@HippyMomPhD My wife taught in Yonkers, NY in 1993 and used Saxon. She loved it. Some folks may not want to hear this, but K-5 teachers that aren’t specialists should be using a scripted program such as DI, or Saxon.

You won't like to hear this, but Saxon was the first math program that helped my struggling math student. It's not flashy, it's not colorful. It is slow, practice-heavy, procedural program. And it works.

@educator4ever36 “Latus Rectum” I can’t pronounce it differently so I just warn them it’s coming, and tell them to get it out of their system. 🤣

Happy Friday! A rare funny post from me - Teachers - what words do you pronounce differently or change to avoid the entire class laughing hysterically and losing all focus? Mine were always the planet Uranus and the term Pianist. Can’t wait to hear yours! 😂😂😂

@MrDanielBuck Try it in NotebookLM. It’s better referring to only the documents you load into it.

Ok, I had my first "woah" moment with an LLM I fed it Title II of the Higher Education Act. It read the whole thing and is answering my questions about it Typically, that's the kind of information that only a policy wonk or career bureaucrat could provide It did it in seconds

Innovations Academy, the charter school I cofounded in in San Diego in 2006, had a district site visit last week. We were told *by the district officials* that it was so nice to see children working on projects and working together in the classroom. Every other visit they'd done was nothing but Chromebooks.

I’m of the view lately that early successes are tied to the quality and efforts of miracle leaders - and there just aren’t enough of them to go around. Excellent post by Pondiscio.

@edudissenter @Doug_Lemov Oh, so that’s how librarians are waving the white flag when faced with behavior issues. So halls, cafeterias, outdoors and now libraries are community areas, where the hell do kids go to read and think? So sad.

@Doug_Lemov The librarian here just explained to me that libraries are “community spaces” now; i.e. the activist librarians decided that quiet was an oppressive Western norm that needed to be dismantled.

Why aren’t American teachers curious about other countries’ education systems? Do they really think we have nothing to learn?

@ImColbyLyons @greg_ashman Alright, but countless people are helping young people find something meaningful and helping them achieve it - every caring, hard working, teacher on the planet, for a start. How is this the one thing that is going well in education?
