@hanlonbt Thanks for writing this, Brian. A really wonderful piece that I learned from and that perfectly explained how far the movement has come.

Becerra sued a city under the HAA and won. Steyer backed SB 79 when it was costly to. Porter has shown rare willingness to say no to allies. Mahan cut fees and unlocked 2,000 homes in San Jose. 3,300+ word assessment of the candidates, and 3 asks for the winner:🧵

@aherman2006 I just think people are missing how funny it is that Unrig LA, whose preferred candidate is *Nithya*, is boosting the exact ad designed to squeeze her out of the election. Amazing.

@coryfromphilly It's misguided urbanists trying to recreate NYC without any of the urban characteristics that make NYC possible.

@LinkofSunshine The Founder *obviously* envisioned an "It's all Chicago!" state of Illinois, so at least that's correct.

🚨GROK's CONGRESSIONAL MAP: What would the MOST FAIR U.S. House map look like if we followed the Founding Fathers’ Principles? - Apportion seats strictly by population (census) - Draw compact, contiguous districts inside each state only - No partisan data, no racial engineering, no weird shapes - Prioritize whole counties & communities RESULT: A clean map with 305 D to 130 D seats in a 50/50 nation. Not gerrymandering - just geography. This is what neutral, compact redistricting naturally produces. The Founders wanted local geographic representation, not national proportional math. No salamanders. No tentacles. Just logical districts. True fairness under the Constitution isn’t forcing 50/50 seats. It’s letting Americans vote where they actually live. THIS MAP HONORS THE CONSTITUTION'S DESIGN. What do you think?

@mattyglesias Of course. But it's extremely funny that Unrig LA reposted it, earnestly thinking it was an attack ad and not that it was meant to drive their preferred candidate out of the general.

@UnrigLA I'm legitimately curious why you're reposting an ad clearly designed to knock your preferred candidate out of the general election in favor of a Republican.

And yeah, I don't want to speak to Fed's intent, but the more you listen to it the more it screams bait and can't be understood as anything else but bait that will be targeted to conservative audiences to boost Pratt (in the short term at least). x.com/UnrigLA/status…

That was a very substantive housing conversation. Porter, Mahan, Steyer, probably in that order, clearly understood what they're talking about. Villaraigosa sounded like he prepped for a debate. Becerra, especially early on, sounded like he released his housing plan yesterday

@FifthRocket @mateosfo @dabluck @KelseyTuoc Exactly, if the only metric of success is a citywide rent decrease, then YIMBY policies have mostly failed. Fortunately, pro-housing folks are more nuanced than that.

@EN_parker @mateosfo @dabluck @KelseyTuoc What do you think of “rents haven’t dropped in any city building new market-rate housing. Zero renters helped. The unit isn’t the primary vector of unaffordability, it’s merely the last component. Talk to a housing expert sometime”

(((Matthew Lewis))) cults & consequences
Traffic deaths have not gone down in any city where Waymo is operating. Zero lives have been saved. That said, we will know in ~ 5-10 years if Waymo is better than the best human drivers (they only release data that compares them to the worst human drivers).

@mateosfo @dabluck @KelseyTuoc @FifthRocket Here's a good one for this crew: A city upzones a neighborhood and sees a 15% increase in housing starts. After the new units are built, there has been no fall in rents. Does that mean the upzoning failed? Or can we say "this is good but doesn't solve the whole problem?"

Contrary to the conventional wisdom, and to what New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani believes, the First Amendment does not protect the right to assemble. It protects “the right of the people peaceably to assemble.” Those who threaten Jews by trying to break through police barricades (one of the cops was hospitalized at the incident) are not assembling peacefully. catholicleague.org/anti-israel-mo…

@mateosfo @KelseyTuoc @FifthRocket FWIW, I've never seen communication from the company that says they're merely safer than the "average" human. They do point out significant crash reductions compared to the average human, but that doesn't exclude also being safer than the best humans.

@mateosfo @KelseyTuoc @FifthRocket Here's a screenshot of one relevant section. Reducing crashes by 92% would be significantly safer than even the safest human driver, no? (And again, the vast majority of these crashes were humans crashing into Waymos).

@mateosfo @KelseyTuoc @FifthRocket You're right that Uber/Lyft drivers are safer than average. I haven't seen the 40% figure but I think that's reasonable. But Waymo is *90%* safer per VMT (and almost all of the crashes that do happen are the fault of other drivers).

I sometimes dream about what the Fullerton Council would be like if there were a third smart, considerate, responsible person joining Zahra/Charles. Then I wake to this terrible city government that is signing us up for disaster in order to appease the loudest people in the room.

Here's a recap of the discussion among the council members that resulted in the illegal denial of the #BuildersRemedy project -- 32 townhomes -- by the #Fullerton City Council on 5/5/26. 😵‍💫 cc: @California_HCD @AGRobBonta @PithyPai

@mateosfo I cross a busy street every day while waking my kids to school. The last three days in a row, I've had to stop and yell at drivers who weren't paying attention and blew through the intersection. They haven't hit us yet, but there's a chance they someday will. Waymos never will.

@mateosfo And no matter how safe the human driver, we still get distracted, text while driving, etc (I have seen my drivers doing this). Waymos do not, which is why their crash rate is a tiny proportion of even the safest human drivers. Waymos clearly save some lives relative to Uber!
