𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱, 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 Nearly 1.3 billion tonnes of food produced globally for human consumption is lost or wasted each year along the food supply chain, according to the @FAO study on Global Food Losses and Food Waste. We can help reduce this level of food waste through measures like senstizing small-scale farmers on proper post-harvest handling, to build their skills in proper handling and storage. Proper post-harvest handling is the first step toward value addition because it keeps produce in good condition so it can be processed or sold at a better price. Value-added products often fetch higher market prices and create more income opportunities for farmers. Limio Patricia, a small-scale farmer from Koviruko Farmer Field School in Adjumani district, highlights how value addition practices such as proper sorting, grading, and packaging has helped her earn a reasonable income from her produce. Within @PeasantsLeague, 10 functional food cooperatives are spearheading a revolution in how farmers' produce reaches the plate. By connecting farmers directly to consumers, these cooperatives help farmers earn fair prices while communities access fresh and healthy food.

It is concerning that many small-scale farmers fail to realize the fruits of their hard work due to poor post-harvest handling practices. They till the land, plant, weed, and harvest their crops with great effort, yet improper drying, poor storage, drying produce on bare ground, and using unclean tarpaulins for processing can turn all that effort into waste. Proper post-harvest handling is essential to protect our produce, reduce losses, and minimize market rejections. #FoodSafety #AvoidPostHarvestLosses

𝗔𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲… 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 These natural toxins produced by molds can grow in our everyday foods such as maize, peanuts, tree nuts, and dried spices, often before harvest, during storage, transport, or processing. Why should we care? Exposure to aflatoxins can cause liver cancer, weakened immunity, and growth impairment in children. We all have a role to play in preventing the aflatoxin threat through good post-harvest practices, diet diversification and adherence to food safety regulations. #FoodSafety

𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 Drastic reduction in pollinator populations in Africa is linked to widespread conventional methods of food production. Pesticides use negatively affects bee health and reproduction but with Agroecology, pollinators are protected. Bee population collapse threatens crop yields and farmer incomes. At @ESAFFUG , we advocate for the banning of hazardous agrochemicals and the transition to nature-based agriculture that protects pollinators. This week, the @ESAFFUG team wrapped up a field visit across four districts of Kumi, Mbale, Bugiri, and Mayuge to strengthen Community Agroecology Schools (CAS) structures by building the capacity of their committees in agroecology, leadership, operations, record-keeping and how to create synergies with the existing government authorities especially the extension/production department at the Subcounty level. Through our #ECOTOPIA programme on Enabling Transformative Agroecology (ETAP), supported by DKA Austria, we documented farmer-led Agroecological initiatives, institutionalized and strengthened CAS Committee structures and enhanced local coordination for readiness to implement the #ECOTOPIA programme on Agroecological transition and transformation in Eastern Uganda. @dkaaustria @H3000EastAfrica #AgroecologyNow #ETAP2026

District Local Governments (DLGs) across the four districts demonstrated strong commitment to supporting Community Agroecology Schools through extension services, capacity building, and closer collaboration with farmers. Farmers are already restoring soils, protecting biodiversity, and building resilience to climate change. In collaboration with DLGs, @ESAFFUG remains committed to ensuring that the efforts of small-scale farmers are recognized, supported, documented, and scaled. #AgroecologyNow #ETAP2026

#PauseForPurpose | @akutui, @ESAFFUG, emphasised the need for the @_AfricanUnion Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU-CEVAWG) to intentionally address the unique realities faced by persons with disabilities. Her remarks underscored that continental frameworks must go beyond general protections by incorporating tailored responses that recognise intersecting vulnerabilities experienced by women and girls with disabilities across rural and agricultural communities. 🌱

#PauseForPurpose | Joseline Komuhangi, @eassigender, underscored the importance of embedding Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) within a coherent and enforceable framework under the @_AfricanUnion Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU-CEVAWG). Her intervention called for clear and binding state obligations on prevention, prosecution, and survivor support, while emphasising inclusivity, including protection for non-nationals, and recognising FGM as rooted in structural discrimination and broader gender inequality. ✊🏾

We can reduce the dangers that chemical-intensive farming poses to our food systems by turning to safer, nature-friendly alternatives. Muheki Grace, a small-scale farmer from Kyamukona Women’s Group and a participant in the CRIFS project in Mubende district explains how bio-inputs not only prevent pest infestations but also improve soil health and support a balanced ecosystem.
