Hope for Betty! We are finally making the 3 hour drive home from Stahl’s Exotics, where we found out that Betty is very anemic. This aligns with the bb shape object in her digestive system - metal toxicity. Turkeys (like many other birds) really like shiny things so it’s not a great leap to assume she found something shiny while out exploring and accidentally poisoned herself. She will need to have shots twice a day for 3-6 weeks (!!) to bind the metal leaching into her blood, and hopefully will pass the object on her own. If not, surgery may be needed but we hope that it won’t come to that. The anemia explains why she has been so lethargic, and why she turned an upsetting shade of blue. But it should start to noticeably resolve in the next 48 hours. So we will watch her very very closely in the meantime. She’s not out of the woods yet but we are very hopeful for a full recovery. I do not wish seeing your turkey love’s face turn blue upon anyone! Oh, and on top of that it’s our 5 year anniversary today! And Ryan had to skip his doctors appointment for his knee in order to come with me to take Betty up to Fairfax. The vets felt sorry for him since he was so obviously limping and in pain and gave him some ice for his knee 🥹 Not the anniversary we were hoping for but there isn’t anyone else I could imagine living this life with!
