Nuclear power reduces the carrier's dependence on tankers whilst cats n traps provide for proper AEW cover, airborne AAR and long range air resupply.

France's Porte-Avions Nouvelle Génération (PANG) or New Generation Aircraft Carrier is formidable: • Displaces 75,000 tonnes • Nuclear powered • 2,000 crew • 30 fixed-wing aircraft - Rafale, SCAF, & E2 Hawkeye • 6-8 ASW helicopters. • Expected cost: €10 billion. As impressive as the "France Libre" will be, I worry that it puts too many eggs in one basket. In a world of naval drones and hypersonic missiles, three smaller vessels might be preferable to one big one.

Rosyth took 3 months.
We Did it in 28 days.

Selling the 3 T23s and Bay are amongst the biggest naval crimes this century. Would the frigate fleet be as fragged now?

In 2005 the MOD signed an agreement to sell 3 Type 23 Frigates to Chile. HMS NORFOLK, MARLBOROUGH & GRAFTON still serve today as Almirante Cochrane, Condell and Lynch. The RN retains 7 of the original class of 16. @HMSStAlbans being the last frigate to be commissioned in 2002.

@thinkdefence Up orders to 9 Type 26 and 6 Type 31 to give you three available 26s and two available 31s at any one time. ASTER 30 B1NT for T45, SAMP/T batteries, carrier based AEW/C to replace Crowsnest. CAPTOR-E for Typhoon and 6 additional P8s.

@thinkdefence It doesn't need to be quiet. T31 derived (9000,10000 tonnes) with enough electrical generation capacity for directed energy weapons. And a direct drive GT/DG propulsion plant that can achieve at least 28kts with the ability to increase speed quickly and reliably.

For a new air defence destroyer to replace Type 45, why don't we do Type 45 and a bit?. Can we simply evolve the design or is a clean sheet the best option?. And is there enough module build capacity to do this now, get the metal bashing done early?

Warspite damaged two capital ships at Jutland, taking 15 hits herself, in Norway she sank three destroyers and a u-boat, at Calabria she scored the longest ranged hit recorded at 24km. At Matapan she sank three cruisers and two destroyers. Bombed at Crete and Salerno, she survived to serve at Normandy and on the Sheldt.

@pinstripedline but RFA have security clearances + relevant training & experience, etc. If these pure civvie crews are paid more than RFA why would RFA personnel stay with company? Aside from anything else who will do secure comms? Neither RN or RFA have surplus.

The frustrating truth about UK defence expenditure is that the nuclear deterrent is so massively expensive that it leaves insufficient money for our conventional forces. Nuclear weapons give Britain a leading position within NATO and globally, maintaining our geopolitical influence. However, if our conventional forces fall below a minimum threshold of credibility, we risk being pushed towards an unacceptable response to any act of aggression: either do nothing or escalate early. Credible conventional forces prevent the nuclear deterrent from becoming our first and only lever. Conventional forces buy options, time, and political freedom of action
