@DefenceSenseUK @DefenceSynergia @IBallantyn I think MN would agree with you but the strength of the Nuclear industry in France made Nuclear power a non-negotiable which in-turn forces them into a one carrier Navy.

@Paddock_View @ModernNavy As where the DG CV8s before installing the new Volvo Pentas. I ran the project for the yard that put the Pentas on 2 of the Bahrain based Ships. Rosyth took 3 months. We Did it in 28 days. Post midlife update the sonar Is far more resilliant.

@TBrit90 Not as bad but the real harm was delaying T26 that coupled with axing T45 7 and 8.

If you could 'action this day' for the British Armed Forces, what would it be. Two rules 1. No infinity money 2. No technology pipe dreams

@thinkdefence It doesn't need to be quiet. T31 derived (9000,10000 tonnes) with enough electrical generation capacity for directed energy weapons. And a direct drive GT/DG propulsion plant that can achieve at least 28kts with the ability to increase speed quickly and reliably.

For a new air defence destroyer to replace Type 45, why don't we do Type 45 and a bit?. Can we simply evolve the design or is a clean sheet the best option?. And is there enough module build capacity to do this now, get the metal bashing done early?

@FennellJW @stuartroxy Agreed. Although on looks alone it's still HOOD for me. Would not want to take into a scrap with a Battlecruiser or Battleship though.

@pinstripedline but RFA have security clearances + relevant training & experience, etc. If these pure civvie crews are paid more than RFA why would RFA personnel stay with company? Aside from anything else who will do secure comms? Neither RN or RFA have surplus.

A grey arrival for @HMSSomerset this morning as she made her way towards the Breakwater for a Boat Transfer whilst navigating through a heavy swell off Penlee and into Plymouth Sound!

The frustrating truth about UK defence expenditure is that the nuclear deterrent is so massively expensive that it leaves insufficient money for our conventional forces. Nuclear weapons give Britain a leading position within NATO and globally, maintaining our geopolitical influence. However, if our conventional forces fall below a minimum threshold of credibility, we risk being pushed towards an unacceptable response to any act of aggression: either do nothing or escalate early. Credible conventional forces prevent the nuclear deterrent from becoming our first and only lever. Conventional forces buy options, time, and political freedom of action

@pegge49 @Gabriel64869839 Well the correct way to do is for it to be requirement led and it costs what it costs. I think that was the plan but the chancellor seems to disagree

@Gabriel64869839 Now if only they'd fully costed the SDR & had an associated DIP ready to be released at the same time. Wouldn't it be great if that was how a joined up Government did defence. Instead they release a headline grabbing word salad promising much, but clearly have no procurement plan

Absolutely no idea when accursed Defence Investment Plan might be published at this point. Even March looking dicey. And if it doesn't happen before 26 March, not only there is Easter recess but Scotland elections purdah. If they use that not to publish, jump straight to May...
