@gowildedinburgh @WOLCT Great film, Tom. My favourite bird on the Water of Leith. And I like how the fledgling already has ‘the dip’……

First dipper chick to fledge this morning - siblings still being fed in the nest! We have apx 16 pairs of dippers on the 12.75 mile walkway section of the Water of Leith. Looking forward to seeing a lot more chicks in May! #dipper #waterofleith #urbanwildlife #edinburgh

@AlanWilson_SP This what I saw on 29th October. Got to hope they were careful with what they removed. I’m sure they were.

@Edinburgh_Walks @WOLCT He painted all over Scotland, mainly landscape and castles. The one below was painted in 1904 before the one with a similar view I posted previously.

@Threadinburger Informative and enjoyable read, thanks. Regarding Sandport Street Bridge I’d always known this as Fishquay Bridge between Coalhill and Bridge Street. Do you know where the fish quay was? By St. Ninian’s Church? I think Wine Quay was on the Shore side near the foot of Shore Place.

@cocteautriplets There was ‘The Laurie’ (Laurie Street Picture House) somewhere around where Kirkgate House now sits. My grandfather-in-law talked about it being a flea pit that had no toilets that he visited on Saturday morning to watch cowboy films in the 1920’s cinematreasures.org/theaters/60045

@ThelmaScotland @thecockburn Using the towers of the Hub, St Giles and the Tron to triangulate, I think this photo is taken from the top of the tower of St Patrick's Catholic Church in the Cowgate. The curved metal behind the minister seems to match with the copper dome of the tower.

Today's donated pic of the day is something of a mystery, we have no date, no names and no exact location. Possibly the #1940s or #1950s & definitely #Edinburgh but which roof do you think they might be on? Or does anyone recognise the men in the photo?

It may be tiny but this is one of the most spectacular gilt mosaic ceilings I’ve seen - and it’s hiding in the heart of #Leith.

@cocteautriplets Just over-by on the ground of the old Shrubhill bus depot was Gallowlea, a sandy knoll where poor souls were executed and their remains left to rot or burnt. A warning for those travelling north into Edinburgh from Leith. The sand reputed to be used in the mortar or the New Town.

I always thought the Dean Village ( or controversially should it be Dene Village/Village of Dene ) was on the land now taken up by the Dean Cemetery. and that the old village by the water was the Water of Leith Village.

@bfford @ThelmaScotland That was my thought too. The dairy in Duke Place. It was the windows that I thought - from memory - were very similar.

Today’s picture was taken in #1948. though we do not know where (possibly Leith). A dairy worker is standing beside some complicated dairy equipment, wearing his overalls and rubber boots but, alas, with the hygienic image ruined by the lit cigarette dangling from his fingers!
