This guy is a getting a lot of shit for this take, but he’s largely correct. If you want your kid to go play on his high school baseball team, he has to be a club baseball player or be in the top like 3% of athletes if not. That’s just life in 2026.
Jason Helmes@anymanfitness

Bad news, dude: If your kid doesn’t play travel/AAU they have no chance of playing varsity in high school. Only exceptions would be small, rural schools without many players to choose from. Any decent sized high school, every kid on varsity plays travel.

@Nfldraftregs @EdstrattonIII @chrisorzy I can't believe how many people miss this point, it is so dumb. The point isn't that a coach would ever pick a kid just because they play club, it's because the club player is usually the better player when you zoom out.

@moneyandthangs @coachdeesmith Hardly any kids, I don't know any that have been cut from varsity sports, any coach that would cut players isn't a good coach, the kids that aren't good choose other sports because they know if they are good or not, they self regulate.

@EdstrattonIII @chrisorzy Thank you. If you are good, the coaches don’t care where else you play or how you got good. No coach is going to say “this other kid is smoking you on the court but you play on XYZ AAU team, so I’m keeping him”. Just doesn’t happen

Youth travel baseball is the worst. You don’t need to go anywhere for competition! Just drove 3 hours round trip to see my son get walked 4x

BREAKING: For the first time in history the MN Senate voted to ban sale of assault-type weapons and high capacity magazines. The vote was 34-33 along party lines with all Democrats in favor, GOP against. The bill also includes funding for school safety and mental health programs.

Nah. Dad of a very good HS athlete here. While there is some value in AAU, it exists for $. Here’s another path: 1) get your kid in the weight room 2) do drills with them. YouTube is your friend! 3) talk to the coaches 4) go to skill camps 5) eat and sleep well 6) be consistent

@Nfldraftregs @chrisorzy Yup. Good kids play. My kids never played travel league and they never practiced a sport outside of that sports season, they didn't even do "Captain's practice" they waited until real practices started with the coach. They play a varsity sport every season

I think this is a false equivalency. Yes, most varsity players play club/travel/AAU, but that’s not why they made the team. They made the team because they were good. If someone was really good, but didn’t do all that, they’d still make the team. Ex- my daughter, who now plays in college, decided she wanted to play volleyball in high school. Never played and all the club tryouts were done. So we played together every day for hours. She put Xs on the wall and played by herself. I bought a net and hung it in the backyard. Never played organized Vball. Showed out in tryouts and made varsity on a good team. Then, yes she played club to refine her skills, but really just because she loved to play and club gave her that opportunity

This is so dumb. You can get everything on this list except for “tour the entire country, see the sights” from local rec-league sports that don’t cost $5,000 per year per kid, and you can take that money (if you have it) to do your own traveling and sightseeing..,
Chris Orzechowski@chrisorzy

Travel sports: - guaranteed family time every weekend - tour the entire country, see the sights - kids gain athletic skills and priceless memories - chance at scholarships/NIL money - kids stay out of trouble - make friends with people in town This is supposed to be “bad”?

Sure but that also proves the point I’m trying to make. In many cases (suburbs especially where ppl have $$$), you basically HAVE to play travel if you want to play in high school. With both of our girls when they hit 7th grade we asked them if they wanted to just have fun or try to play in high school. They both said high school. So we told them what it would require commitment wise. Both wanted to do it so we started travel at that age. If we didn’t zero chance they’d make varsity. None.

This article says “70% of 13 year olds have stopped playing a sport they used to enjoy” It’s been touted as a reason to avoid travel sports. I have another theory. 13 is 8th grade. Maybe they try out for their school team and don’t make it. So they quit. They realize they won’t play in high school. 8th grade has always been a big drop off year for kids who suck at sports. sportsleadership.acu.edu/why-kids-quit-…

Only do travel sports is your kid is very talented and very competitive. My oldest has been doing travel baseball and ice hockey since he was 5. He’s now 17. It’s been a great experience. Very demanding and a major commitment but it’s been a great fit for his personality and helped to shape him into the young man he is today. No regrets there. My youngest is more the rec kid. Plays multiple sports, average player and loves playing with his friends in town. He expresses interest in travel but he steered him away from it bc he we know he’s not really cut out for it. So all that is to say just depends on the kid. If he is hardcore into it then go all in on travel. Hope this helps.

This isn't true but... If your kid is average or maybe slightly above average having more opportunity for reps in travel ball will help them grow their skills. But when everyone hits puberty things will change drastically. Kids get bigger and stronger, etc... Then of course there are kids who are naturally good and they will make varsity just rolling out of bed.

The Democratic Party gave you: Social Security Medicare Medicaid Obamacare The 40 hour work week Women the right to vote The Civil Rights Act The Voting Rights Act Gay marriage The Fair Housing Act And so much more.... But sure, keep singing that same tired "Democrats ain't shit" song that Hasan Piker and the other communists and chaos agents taught you. It's not gonna make him want to bang you bro. It just keeps liberals divided so that you never have the unity or allies help you get the things you claim to want.
Dylan@dmc_dmcc

This is the future of the Democrat party (Democratic Socialism) and it’s sad literally the only thing holding it back is neoliberal freaks who would rather work with Republicans than people who want universal healthcare, better wages, & a better floor of living. It’s wild to me.

@EdstrattonIII @_CATNERD2 @calecampbell88 Baseball is way less about genetics and more about work/skill. Football and basketball definitely require more athleticism to make it. But yes, good high school teams are comprised of all travel players. Very small schools, rural areas may be different.
