Post-doc in @LabYoule. Playing with protein phase separation, optogenetics and selective autophagy. Tweets represent my own view and not that of the @NIH

@DKThomp Loved the article, but one thing not mentioned was Baumol, which I think is quite relevant. Much more expensive to get outside help for child-care leads to more intensive parenting overall.

New newsletter: MODERN FATHERHOOD WOULD BE UNRECOGNIZABLE TO A 1950'S DAD Compared to their Boomer parents, childcare time among Millennial dads has more than doubled. Compared to their Silent Generation grandparents, it’s nearly quadrupled. You will be hard-pressed to find any part of day-to-day modern life that has changed more in the last half-century than the way today’s parents—and fathers, in particular—spend their time. The new American dad is more present and more exhausted—but also, more satisfied with life. What's behind this half-century transformation? Today's piece combines history, economic analysis, and gorgeous charts galore from @AzizSunderji

What happens when an assembly line runs too fast? Things break down, like the chocolate factory scene from “I Love Lucy” 🍫 Cells have assembly lines too, like ribosome biogenesis We show that cancer cells push this system to the breaking point (1/10) biorxiv.org/content/10.648…

It’s well known that inflammation increases cancer risk, but how? The answer: the epigenome "remembers" inflammation and primes stem cells for cancer. Here is our paper: nature.com/articles/s4158… And a special shoutout to the lead author @snaga13 A 🧵

Excited to share my postdoc work, out on bioRxiv today! Histones package DNA into nucleosomes to form the building blocks of chromatin, but how modular and programmable is this system? 1/9

@NateSilver538 As someone who grew up in DC area and now lives here permanently, Washington cannot be that high - way too many transplants and many locals gave up fandom in the Snyder era. That ranking is way too biased based on what Jayden Daniels did last year.

Something we're testing out: NFL fan avidity ratings. What teams look way off? Basically, we're looking at what predicts home field advantage, above and beyond weather and travel distance (which can be accounted for separately).

@JerusalemDemsas @ezraklein @DKThomp On housing abundance. While NIMBYism is not the way to encourage growth in less populated places, is it really a worthwhile goal to encourage more super-city growth. Wouldn't it lead that to more resentment/polarization? Think of what happens in sports with "small markets".

@PodSaveAmerica Given Harris's over performance in the swing states compared to the overall country, why is there a focus on trans issues, since it seems from those swing state results that Trumps attack ads were not effective relative to Kamala's?

Today's @NobelPrize for John Hopfield recognizes only one of his contributions - he's a true polymath. I strongly recommend his solo author PNAS papers (i) long-range e- tunneling in proteins (1974), (ii) kinetic proof-reading (1974), (iii) Hopfield nets (1982). Each is a gem!

Today @wmata announced a $28m FY24 year end surplus. This was due to aggressive cost mgmt reducing expenses by $62m. That is on top of $50+m savings developing the FY24 budget. So #wmata is delivering more and better service for $100+m less. Excellent job by the team!🧵1/3
