@SpludD @posta_octavian There were already liberal Protestant denominations performing gay marriages by the time it was legalized. If anything, gay marriage was a victory for religious freedom.

@posta_octavian I think the bigger qualm is the transformation of marriage as a religious initiation into something completely secular and at odds with its religious core.
People really didn't have issue with civil unions. It's the branding of the same thing as "marriage" thats contentious.

Opposing gay marriage was/is one of the biggest conservative Ls ever.
Legalising it has:
- raised the prestige of monogamous long-term marriages among gay men
- made being gay less of a clandestine secret culture
- integrated gay men as productive members of society with many positive effects
So everything conservatives *should* want came from its legalisation, despite it having been something they opposed.

Discussions about China among socialists in the west very rarely bring up hukou, which is odd seeing as it's probably the single greatest systemic inequality in China and the Chinese economy basically would not function without it.

@maxnesterak I see nothing wrong with betting on yourself to win. Feel the same on the sports side. Betting on yourself (or your team) to lose, obviously more problematic.
Am perplexed however about Klein's seemingly contradictory views on sports betting v prediction markets.

only now, relatively recently, modern protestantism has diverged from that.

I went into a Somali Walmart in Minneapolis to buy one item. Somali worker comes up to me, can’t speak English, but is seemingly demanding proof of purchase. I showed her proof on my phone, but she couldn’t read it She then tried to DETAIN me. So I left. The irony is UNREAL🤣
