I posted a video on Monday talking about how much I hate Pedro Pascal - and it isn't because he's a leftist. It's because the entire entertainment space is working overtime to position him as the "cure" for traditional masculinity. That the "Pedro Pascal" brand of masculinity is the right one - because he cries a lot, is very emotional, fragile, sensitive, because he's so vocal about trans rights. He is allowed to touch women and behave somewhat bizarrely towards them (there are infinite videos of him performatively complimenting women's nails?) and nobody bats an eye because he's got this gay affect that is disarming. This would make the women of the Internet scream if any other man did it. But Pascal gets a pass. His entire persona seems so manufactured and contrived and performative. And I genuinely cringe when I see his overly emotional displays all over my feed. I would have less of an issue with him if he seemed sincere. But he isn't. He's just a 50-year-old weirdo who behaves like a teenage girl. And the media is bashing women up and forcing us to find him attractive. He isn't. He's a fake and I hate him. 😂

Confession I: I don't think "Anti-War" is actually a viable intellectual position. Confession II: I think that's self-evident, despite all those branding themselves as Anti-War. It's a proxy. And sometimes it's a proxy for something good, decent, and wholesome. But not always.

Our new paper tries to quantify how smarter AI can be controlled by dumber AI and humans via nested "scalable oversight". Our best scenario successfully oversees the smarter AI 52% of the time, and the success rate drops as one approaches AGI. My assessment is that the "Compton constant", the probability that a race to AGI culminates in loss of control of Earth, is >90%.

The Biden administration set us up for a proxy war with Russia over Ukraine. It did so on behalf of backers that wanted the conflict—for reasons we must speculate about. The victims of the scheme are the Ukrainian, Russian and American citizens. The Biden administration is gone, but the war’s original backers want the battle to continue. And they have drafted Europeans and Americans into supporting renewed commitment to a losing battle on the basis of (what seems to me) a childish fairytale in which one side is pure evil and the other good, and all that is needed to pick the good side and double down until the dice roll our way. That’s not how it works. Military fairytales lead to quagmires, and the longer we double down, the fewer the options, the worse the final analysis. Ukraine already faces a decidedly uncertain future based on the last round of fairytales the public blindly accepted. When do we wake up and have an adult conversation about how to achieve the best of the outcomes that remain within in the realm of the possible?

Let me explain yet again my recent posts about Ukraine because even some of my smart friends who are die hard Ukraine supporters are misunderstanding me. I'm criticizing the selective outrage of say my academic colleagues who are jumping on board a fashionable cause. There are innumerable tragedies around the world to which they have always remained perfectly silent. But Ukraine has become the end-all to people who until 15 minutes ago could not identify Ukraine on a map (even if the country's name were conspicuously marked on it). Hence, I'm critiquing fashionable faux- empathy signalling that is meant to demonstrate that you are a good person. I'm not pronouncing a position on the conflict. Reading can be very hard but hang in there, I'm sure you'll get it.
