There is something stomach churning in watching a Jewish person hand over one more pound of flesh, buckling under the pressure to sell out his people as the price of ever temporary “acceptance”. Like in Kafka’s metamorphosis (a story only a Jew could write) Jews, who grew up to believe that being Jewish is fun, prestigious and easy, woke up one morning to discover they have been transformed in the eyes of their peers into a giant repulsive insect (otherwise known as shrill cries of “you’re genocidal baby killers”). I understand why Jews who have lost the muscle memory of the Jewish condition buckle under the incentive structure that raises steeply the price of standing with your people and rewards selling them out, but it is still sickening to watch.

For years, I’ve condemned Netanyahu and his extremist government and the devastation they’ve inflicted on Gaza. It’s why I’ve been clear I won’t support U.S. funding for the destruction of Palestinian communities. I’ve stopped short of calling it genocide, but I can’t anymore.

As a result of violent attacks against three visibly Jewish Pitt students and a eruption of antisemitism in our city, leadership at the University of Pittsburgh asked me to co-chair a working group on antisemitism. It was an honor to be asked, but this is not work I want to do. I'd rather be out building bridges. After this announcement, our local Antifa chapter started attacking me on social media. Cowards also left vile antisemitic hatred on the steps of my house. My 10-year old daughter and 7-year old son found this washer. My daughter picked it up and then told her little brother to run inside because, "It's not safe to play outside." This all happened last month. I live steps away from Tree of Life. The Pittsburgh Police and university police detectives are all working on this. I'm deeply concerned about the rhetoric I see here among colleagues - even among professors I thought knew better. I respect your freedom of speech, but when you employ vitriol and blood libelous language to talk about Israel, Zionism, "Zionists," and the Jewish community, you normalize this kind of hatred. You have become the face of the new antisemitism. I'm not scared of these cowards--and you should not be either. But I thought it is important that you are aware of the depths of this hatred. They will not stop our work.

The algorithmic amplification of antisemitism on social media has led to a surge in antisemitic sentiments among the youngest Americans. The difference between AntiZionism and Antisemitism exists solely on paper. In the real world, the two have become inextricably intertwined and reciprocally reinforcing.

But if I were to say "ask Mehdi Hasan about what he thinks about the gharqad tree" as though it amounted to some kind of legitimate criticism of his positions (it isn't), people like Duss would correctly point out the deeply Islamophobic tinge of such a statement. And while I think Hasan is an antisemite, a propagandist, and overall a despicable person in his own right, it has *absolutely nothing* to do with his faith - it has to do with the manner in which he casually devalues Jewish life in the real world. Again, his private religious convictions are none of my business except insofar as they motivate real-world antisemitism. I hope a Hindu wouldn't begrudge me my faith's contempt for polytheism, and likewise I have no interest in attacking Muslims or Christians for their own faith's precepts. I don't know if Duss is a Jew or a gentile, but it doesn't reallt matter - nothing can ameliorate the cynical and insulting character of his statement. Because, while Huckabee may believe I will burn in the pits of hell during the second coming, and Hasan may think I will be righteously slain at the end times, Duss believes my Jewish identity - and therefore my life - is merely a tool to be used and discarded in his temporal political war. Hasan and Huckabee may dream of my harm in a tomorrow that will never come, Duss endeavors towards harming me in the world of today. While the zealots among my Abrahamic cousins destroy the idea of me in prophesy, the antizionist zealots destroy the material me in practice. I know who my real enemy is. END

THE IRRELEVANCY OF ESCHATOLOGY Very few things annoy me as much as antizionist concern-trolling over evangelical eschatology. There are so many bad things about Huckabee's views on the conflict - his rejection of the legitimacy Palestinian national identity, for starters - that appealing to his end-times ideology is unnecessary. Not only is it unnecessary, it obscures the real threats that exist to Jewish life today, in the real world, and it unfairly targets Christians for their faith. As a Jew, a member of a nation whose own beliefs have been mocked and belittled for centuries by men like @mattduss, I cannot countenance such bigotry being done in my name. The insult to Christians aside, this deranged discourse is actively harmful to Jewish life. What people like Duss are trying to do by deploying this argument is driving a wedge between Jews and Christians at a time of intensifying antisemitism, all as a means of pursuing their own (anti-Jewish) political project. Other people's religious belief are frankly none of my business, but their treatment of actual, living Jews certainly is, and it is clear that Duss doesn't really care about either - if he did, he wouldn't be wielding feigned concern for Jewish experience in Christian theology as a means of advancing his sectional political interests in the first place. Christian eschatology states that some segment of Jews will be redeemed upon the second coming, and the rest will effectively experience the same fate as non-believers - eternal damnation. Do I like the prospect of pitchforks and brimstones? Not particularly. Do I care about it? Not in the least. Why? Because I don't believe in Christian eschatology! I only concern myself with Christian theology insofar as it imapacts the lives of real-world, living Jews. As a Jew, Christian eschatology is, by definition, not something I believe in; therefore, I have no reason to be bothered by it. In this sense, Huckabee's beliefs are largely irrelevant to me, except insofar as they empower reactionary *Jewish* politics in Israel. I don't care about Huckabee's views on my "eternal soul," I care about his impact on the health of the Zionist movement, and the Jewish State which I care so deeply about. Huckabee's harm to me can only exist because it can be channeled through Bezalel Smotrich a d his ilk. Like Duss, I too live in the temporal world of politics - and my future, and the future of my children, depend on that world. What's more is the hypocrisy. If I were to reject and castigate people over their eschatological perspectives on the fate of Jews, I'd have to have double the animosity for Muslims that I would for Christians. While I have no interest in doing either, I strongly suspect that those on the left would be far more uncomfortable with the former than they are with the latter. Discomfort aside, let's delve into this a bit further. While Christians believe Jews must accept Christ to achieve salvation, Muslims consider Jews to be "prophet-killers," wholly-corrupt and largely irredemable. Muslim eschatology features genocidal fantasies about trees and rocks calling out to Muslims to kill Jews who hide behind them. This is symbolic of nature itself rejecting the Jewish right to life. And guess what? This eschatological perspective actually informs radical Islamist treatment of Jews in the real world! Islamic eschatology actually has material consequences for the safety of Jewish life! Hamas - a genocidal organization with the blood of many thousands of Jews on its hands - actually cites these passages in its founding charter! (Cont'd, 1/2)

I hope Mike Huckabee is given the opportunity to explain what he believes happens to the Jews after Jesus comes back. Because it's not good!

Jews visibly existing in the same space as Arabs is not "provocation." Outside of whatever bigoted bubble you live in, Jews and Arabs are capable of coexisting.

@arash_tehran I am not condoning the behavior in any shape or form. But, the Jewish guy may have known that the owner is an Arab and the café is called Jerusalem and he may have intended to get a reaction and he is recording him. That can be considered provocation. Let's not bring the war here

A fascinating bit of research for a journalist that wants a fresh look at antisemitism and the effects of policing... In 2018/19 there was a wave of antisemitic violence against the chasidic communities in the New York area. Jewish faces were smashed with paving stones. Men were strangled and brutalized on the streets on their way to shul. Strollers with babies were kicked. It culminated with the murder of five people in two violent attacks over the course of December 2019.

Indeed. Jews have always been hated. That’s why people will gleefully perpetuate all manner of dehumanising lies about the Jewish people. Jews have always also been grossly outnumbered. That’s why these lies are so widely disseminated and believed.
