Meanwhile a constitutionally secular India has spent the last decade renaming Allahabad, Faizabad and Mughalsarai. Mr. @MayaramArvind responded with demographic data to argue India has treated its minorities far better. By choosing that ground, he owns the argument entirely. Mr. Mayaram and I come from the same school in Jaipur. We grew up in an environment where, with due respect, we could disagree with each other openly. He is my super senior and I admire and respect him immensely. And on that ground, I have a severe disagreement. Mr. Mayaram uses real numbers to make a misleading argument. The argument underneath the numbers is that India's secularism has been delivered. That it is an achievement. I want to argue it has repeatedly failed. And that using Pakistan as the benchmark is precisely how you hide that failure from yourself and everyone else. He compares 1947 West Pakistan to 1951 India. But by 1951, Muslims had already been killed and pushed out of India. That is comparing apples to oranges. Either you compare 1947 West Pakistan to 1947 India, or you use 1951 as the benchmark for both. You cannot quietly skip four years of violence against Muslims in India and then declare victory. Let us talk about what those four years actually looked like. Between 500,000 and one million people were killed in total, with some historians putting it as high as two million. Scholars Ritu Menon and Kamla Bhasin documented approximately 50,000 Muslim women abducted in India, against 33,000 Hindu and Sikh women abducted in Pakistan. In absolute numbers, more Muslims were killed. More Muslim women were taken. The greater burden of partition violence fell on Muslims. This is not a Pakistani claim. This is what Indian and international scholarship tells us. Now let us talk about what happened inside India that Mr. Mayaram does not mention it. Jammu, 1947. Muslims were 61% of Jammu's population. A joint India-Pakistan commissioned investigation estimated 70,000 Muslims killed. Scholar Ian Copland puts it at 80,000. Christopher Snedden estimates between 20,000 and 100,000. Jammu went from Muslim majority to Hindu majority in a matter of weeks. Gandhi ji himself said, and I am quoting directly from his collected works: "The Hindus and Sikhs of Jammu or those who had gone there from outside killed Muslims there. The Maharaja of Kashmir is responsible for the happenings in his State." Mewat, 1947. Historian Shail Mayaram, researching her own community, found an explicit state policy of cleansing. Between 30,000 and 82,000 Meo Muslims were killed. 100,000 were forced to flee their homes. Women were abducted. Those who were not killed were forcibly converted. Punjab, 1947. Muslims were 38.4% of what is now Indian Punjab, roughly 3.75 million people. After partition that number collapsed to 90,000, barely 0.5%. An entire community nearly wiped off the map in a single year. This is not ancient history. This is the India of 1947. The very India whose 1951 census Mr. Mayaram uses as his starting point. Now, even taking his numbers at face value, India has done better than Pakistan on minority rights. That is true. But that is the lowest bar imaginable. Because Pakistan is not a secular country. It is an Islamic republic. Its founding idea is that Islam is supreme. It never pretended otherwise. India's constitution says humanity is supreme and humanity is the ultimate goal. Higher ideals come with higher accountability. Pakistan never claimed to know better. We did. Post partition, Pakistan has not seen a Nellie, a Gujarat, a 1992. India has. Pakistan has executed military killings in East Pakistan in 1971. Whereas, India has developed an institutionalized architecture of communal violence, periodic, predictable and politically managed. Pakistan uses its army. India has the BJP, which uses elections. CONT++
