Oketo Avenue, Chicago John Dineen, Ret CPD, born on July 4, 1936, on the West Side of Chicago to the late Tom and Dorothy Dineen, passed away on March 25, 2026. Beloved husband of Marilyn Dineen, nee Callahan, for 68 years. Loving father to Karen (John) Kissane, Susan Dineen, Cindy (Norb) Sliwa, John Michael Dineen, and Timothy (Ret CPD) (Sue) Dineen. Adored and devoted grandfather to AJ (CPD), Jonathan, Beth, Dave, Kyle, Kevin, Megan, Rose, Maggie, and Maddie. He was a great-grandfather to 11. Fond brother of Tom (the late Jean) and Patricia Hennessy, and revered uncle to many nieces and nephews. John was a proud St. Mel's alum, Army veteran, and devoted member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a longtime member of the CPD and the dedicated President of the Fraternal Order of Police for over twenty years, which also included a two-year term as the national @GLFOP President. He was a champion for labor rights and officer benefits whose decades of service and visionary leadership left a lasting impact on the department and all those he represented. John served as National FOP President while also leading @FOP7Chicago in 1980. When Chicago police officers voted to unionize, securing a contract became his primary focus. After the FOP won the right to represent those officers, John made one of the most selfless decisions in leadership. Rarely does a leader at the top step aside for a greater cause, yet that is exactly what he did. He left national office to lead Lodge 7 to its first collective bargaining agreement in 1981, and later worked to secure those rights permanently through the Illinois Labor Relations Act of 1983. That choice is what set him apart as a model of selfless leadership. Above all else, John enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to his caretakers, Kathy, Lynn, Maria, Alice, and nurse Margaret, for their kind and gentle service in the final chapter of his life. Earlier this week, John Dineen, former @GLFOP President and our Lodge namesake, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. There are so many great stories to tell and they will be told in the days to come. It was such an honor and highlight of this term to formally rename the Lodge for John while he was still with us to see and feel the love and respect. God speed Brother! The family of Sheridan Gorman, the Loyola University student who was allegedly killed by an illegal immigrant last week, released a statement in response to Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson calling her murder "senseless violence." "What happened to Sheridan cannot be reduced to a 'senseless tragedy,'" her family said. "Nor can it be explained in general terms about public safety."

Firefighter/EMT Michael Altman has made the next stop in his journey. Altman was transported to Blake/Lamb Funeral Home. The support from every community along the route procession is much appreciated. Keep the Altman family in your prayers.

Another horrendous murder that never should have happened. Great work by @Area3Detectives solving this case quickly, but a family is still without their daughter and a University without their classmate. The politicians that allowed this criminal out and chose not to detain him have some serious explaining to do.

As a father, I grieve for Sheridan’s parents for this unspeakable tragedy. This was a failure of not holding criminal migrants accountable and not protecting the public—and another tragic reason why I was the Dem lead on the Laken Riley law.

As we pray for the Altman family and our brothers and sisters at @CFDLocal2, we remember Michael and the heroic, dedicated man he was. Thank you to @Area3Detectives for the long hours and your dedication getting this offender charged.

Imagine for a moment…you are driving around at work and you are shot for no reason other than your profession. That is exactly what happened to a brave Chicago PD Sgt who was shot last night simply driving in his patrol car. The Sgt was struck in the leg and able to self transport to the hospital, thankfully expected to make a full recovery. The dirtbag who shot the Sgt has been taken into custody. This is the reality for law enforcement in 2026 in America…shot simply for the uniform we wear. It’s despicable…
