@CliveFoster3, as the Windrush Commissioner, can you explain clearly how you intend to use the Hillsborough Law to the advantage of Windrush victims? This law is supposed to place a legal duty on public officials to tell the truth, disclose evidence and cooperate honestly with investigations. Windrush victims need to know how you will make sure those powers are used to uncover what the Home Office did to them. Will you demand the release of every document connected to the Windrush scandal? Will you push for a full statutory public inquiry so officials can be questioned and victims can finally learn who knew what, when they knew it and why innocent British citizens were allowed to lose their jobs, homes, healthcare, pensions, freedom and dignity? Will you challenge missing documents, destroyed records, misleading statements and attempts by officials or departments to hide behind each other? Will you demand that Windrush victims receive proper independent legal representation, just as victims of Hillsborough, Grenfell, the Post Office scandal and the infected blood scandal have fought to receive? Will you support removing the compensation scheme from the Home Office? The department responsible for the scandal should never have been allowed to investigate itself, judge its own wrongdoing and decide how much its own victims deserve. Will you publish a clear plan setting out how the duty of candour will be used to secure truth, accountability, justice and fair compensation for Windrush victims? People are still dying while waiting for justice. They do not need another listening exercise, another apology or another promise that things will improve one day. They need the truth released. They need those responsible held accountable. They need independent legal help. Beyond her public achievements, she was warm, generous and inspiring, always seeing potential where others saw barriers. I feel privileged to have known her.
