Today marks U.S. Hostage and Wrongful Detainee Day. I celebrate my reunion with family & colleagues after 288 horrific days in Russian prison. Waking up free still feels like a miracle. Thank you to all who advocated tirelessly—you brought me home. I honor those who died in captivity, lives stolen by regimes using detention as a weapon. We remember them. The month of January marked nine years since Alina Lopez has been wrongfully detained in Cuba. Alina was lured to Cuba by her ex-husband and arrested. She was unjustly imprisoned for four years, before being released, but is still unable to leave Cuba because of an exit ban. Alina has urgent medical needs that she is unable to treat.
