This paper took nearly 3 years to be published from the time of submission. Meanwhile, many academics still don’t consider work real if it appears first as a preprint. That means years of additional resources were spent satisfying peer review, endless postdoc and student hours chasing incremental revisions. The core results were likely known 5–7 years ago. And if there had been even a small hiccup along the way, it likely would have landed in a lower-tier Nature branded journal such as Nature Communications and received none of the attention or breakthrough framing. This system needs to change. Funding agencies should not just stop paying publishers, but require institutions that take their money not to subscribe to them. Limits on how much grant funding can be spent on endless revisions should be in place too.
