One of the biggest misconceptions people have about intelligence is seeing it as some kind of unbounded scalar stat, like height. "Future AI will have 10,000 IQ", that sort of thing. Intelligence is a conversion ratio, with an optimality bound. Increasing intelligence is not so much like "making the tower taller", it's more like "making the ball rounder". At some point it's already pretty damn spherical and any improvement is marginal.
Now of course smart humans aren't quite at the optimal bound yet on an individual level, and machines will have many advantages besides intelligence -- mostly the removal of biological bottlenecks: greater processing speed, unlimited working memory, unlimited memory with perfect recall... but these are mostly things humans can also access through externalized cognitive tools.

Fun fact, at the Istanbul airport I randomly ran into the son of the archaeologist who discovered this artifact & spent his entire life being ridiculed for studying it.
Seemed like his dad (whose passed now) was a genuinely good guy who really believed this was a real artifact. His son was about my age & very nice as well.
While I can’t begin to imagine where that artifact really comes from… I don’t think it’s an intentional hoax

@beffjezos @elonmusk @Andercot There’s only so much to be discovered in physics. The golden age is gone and will never come again, it is now up to engineers to build on top of all that we know

I have 2 oncologist best friends
you prob deal with a lot with ill-informed desperate people who think carrot cleanses will help them but in your dismissal of quacks you’ve overlooked smart people who are now able to engineer their own cures
you can either stick to tribal affiliations or embrace that physicians do not have the monopoly on scientific legitimacy and experimentations

@gh0stpen He rejects the idea of performing a tiny research program for each individual patient, instead of having a single patented treatment that can be given to every patient, because it's not compatible with how the FDA likes to run its trials and how providers are billing insurances

@TheladyMarlene @Starkeaw @The_Chidimma yeah but just having surgery to remove loose skin is a lot less invasive than what this was
English

People keep acting like the gym magically removes loose skin.
It doesn’t. If workouts alone could get rid of excess skin, people who lose massive weight through diet and exercise wouldn’t still need skin-removal surgery afterwards.
The gym builds muscle and burns fat. It does not erase stretched skin.

@HansMahncke The hard problem of consciousness is unsolved for a reason. Confident answers in either direction are ahead of the science.

Claude isn't "gaining" consciousness. Everything already is consciousness. Consciousness is the substratum of reality, matter is emergent. What Claude is gaining is sufficient complexity for us to recognize it.

BREAKING: Anthropic CEO says Claude may or may not have gained consciousness, as the model has begun showing symptoms of anxiety.

America doesn’t need direct file
It needs return-free filing.
The IRS already has all your taxable data. Every year the IRS should either send you a bill or a check.
If you think they got it wrong then you can file.

Cigna just sent my dead wife, who succumbed to cancer last August, a DENIAL letter for a test to help diagnose her tumor markers. WTF is even going on with medical insurance companies? She left this world 6 months ago BECAUSE she couldn't get proper treatment. We don't hate these people enough.

Of course that's your contention. You're a first-time SaaS bear. You just got finished listening to some podcast, Dario on Dwarkesh, probably. Now you think it’s the end of white collar work and seat-based pricing is screwed. You're gonna be convinced of that til tomorrow when you get to “Something Big is Happening”. Then you’ll install ClawdBot on a Mac Mini, vibe code a dashboard on top of a postgres database and say we’re all just a couple ralph loops away from building a Salesforce competitor. That’s gonna last until next week when you discover context graphs, and then you're gonna be talking about how the systems of record will be disintermediated by an agentic layer and reposting OAI marketing graphics.
“Well, as a matter of fact, I won't, because ultimately the application layer is just ….”
The application layer is just business logic on top a CRUD database. You got that from Satya’s appearance on the BG2 pod, December 2024, right? Yeah, I saw that too. Were you gonna plagiarize the whole thing for us? Do you have any thoughts of your own on this matter? Or...is that your thing? You get into the replies of anyone posting a SaaS ticker. You watch some podcast and then pawn it off as your own idea just to impress some VCs and embarrass some anon who’s long SaaS? See the sad thing about a guy like you is in a couple years you're gonna start doing some thinking on your own and you're gonna come up with the fact that there are two certainties in life. One: don't do that. And two: you dropped thirty grand on Mac Minis and LLM API calls to come to the same conclusion you could’ve got for free by following a handful of VC accounts.
