Sunil Gavaskar has criticised the Indian-owned franchise Sunrisers Leeds for signing Abrar Ahmed in the The Hundred Draft. Gavaskar said that money paid to players from Pakistan could indirectly contribute to the deaths of Indian soldiers and civilians, expressing strong disapproval of the decision.

@CricketopiaCom No matter how great cricketer you may have been but sometimes you need to steep low to please your masses. Thats what this country has become ! Not sure if he said this, but if he did, low could be the only word i can write here. Respect can be lost very quickly.

LIMA LIMA! {A Tribute to Sqn Ldr Syed Mohammed Ali Ameer, Squadron Commander Lima Squadron, 1976-1977 (NDA courses 51 to 57)} By: Maj Gen Anil Sengar (Retd), NDA/L/54 @AnilSEN69614052 Incident 1: Ragging was always in the NDA's DNA. Sometimes, it got ugly. Well, NDA has had some great traditions, but like many stupid regulations in the army, one such existed in NDA too. When a cadet joins the NDA, he is issued 12 handkerchiefs for the entire duration of three years, and longer if he gets relegated. The stupid part is that all these 12 cheapest pieces of hosiery are to be returned at the time of passing out. Height of expectations, I’d say, where everything changes hands every few days, including cycle valves. The stupidity of this order is put in perspective when you consider that, even now, when no one else is eying these 12 by 12-inch real estate, I lose one every time I go out of the house. Expecting them to be preserved for 3 years, the man who wrote this order must be given a Nobel Prize for both hallucination and stupidity. So, a couple of months before the passing out parade, an academy-wide campaign starts to collect hankies for the sixth-termers to return. I was a 5th-term sergeant in the first rotation. The sixth termers with foresight started early, and I got orders for 100 handkerchiefs. Normally, I was not the one who was keen to take a post on the roadside. But this call beyond duty got me deployed on the roadside ROP. When this handkerchief harvesting season begins every term, the cadets up to the fourth term are doomed. The hanky will go for being dirty or for being too clean. Some smart Alecs carry two, one for use and another for the Sergeant's inspection. It is carried in its polythene packing, as issued from Kapoor and Co. Bad luck, depending on the Sergeant's mood, both will go: the brand new one for being carried in a polythene bag. Over the week, I collected handkerchiefs and passed them on to the sixth-termers. During one such mission, I asked a third-termer from Kilo Squadron to report to me with eight handkerchiefs because he was carrying one very clean hanky with its logo still attached. That hanky had to go; it had an imaginary spot that only I could see. He reported with six hankies. On being asked why he was two hankies short, he gave some vague excuse. I just swung my Sergeant's sash across his face and told him to fuck off, having confiscated his six handkerchiefs. Something unusual had happened a few days earlier. Another third-termer from Kilo Squadron had run away. That put Kilo Squady's backside on fire. In NDA, a third-termer never runs away after surviving the first two terms. It is here that my Squady, Sqn Leader Ali Ameer, comes into the scene. The third-termer's face had swollen because of the sash strike across his face. He complained to his Squady in Kilo Sqn. I was called to his Squadron office. There stood the cadet with a swollen face "Did you manhandle him?" Asked the Kilo Squady. "Yes, I struck him with a sash, never touched him," I replied. He brought a paper and a pen and asked me to write what I just said. "Sir, I must speak to my Squadron Commander before I give anything in writing." He tried to bully me into writing. I would not budge. He then connected me to Sqn Leader Ali Ameer on his office phone at about 3 PM. After he had spoken to him, he handed me the phone. "Sengar, you are not giving anything in writing. I will be in the Squadron in 15 minutes, see me there." I went to my Squadron and waited for him. "Yes, tell me what exactly happened." I told him the truth. "He said, Kilo Squadron is hot. A third termer from Kilo has run away. The Squady's backside is in trouble, and he is looking for a scapegoat to deflect the heat from him. You have made a mistake at the wrong time, but it does not deserve a relegation. He is bent upon seeking your relegation, as if that is a cause of problems in his squadron." He continued.. "At this time, it is a tough one. I have seen you for three terms. My word, son, if they relegate you, I resign my commission. You can leave. I will call you tomorrow." The Battalion Commander was Wg Cdr Karnik, a thorough gentleman. Two days later, the Squady called me, and told me what was happening… The next day, I was marched up to the Battalion Commander. "We could not save your stripes in the heated battle. Go have lunch, and then you can remove those stripes." What a relief it was! I thanked both of them for their support. In the third rotation, I was again appointed as a Sergeant, and later, the Sqn Cadet Captain of Lima Squadron, in the sixth term. Incident 2: A masst, CCL Coursemate in my class, General Rider Sidhu, relegated twice already by the fourth term, was in serious trouble in Echo Sqn in the 5th. He told me, "Sengar, I am in trouble, my Squady is after my backside. He is hell bent on getting me relegated, which means withdrawal for me. You've got to do something." "Buddy, I am a cadet like you. What can I do? You'd better mend your ways if you have to pass out." I said. "Nahi, kuch kar yaar, koi kar sakata hai toh sirf tu hee kar sakata hai. You get me transferred to your squadron." I laughed, "Guru, I am not the Commandant here, just a 5th termer, like you." "You speak to your Squady, teri baat jarur maane ga." "Okay, I will try," I said. I spoke to Squady Ali Ameer. He said, "Sengar, he is twice relegated; if his Squady is after him, it must be for some reason. Why should I invite a headache knowingly?" "You are absolutely right, sir. I give you my word, he will not be a cause for any worry for you. He will remember you for resurrecting his life and career. I will ensure." "Done, I trust your word." I told Sidhu, "Soon you will be in my Squadron. It is on my trust, don't let me down, buddy." "I won't, not even once. My word." Said Sidhu, and he shook my hand with gratitude. Within a week, Sidhu was transferred to my Squadron. Happy as always, he never gave one chance for anything. He passed out with us. Sadly, he died young in a car accident after commissioning into the ASC. Can you imagine this conversation between a 5th termer and a Squadron Commander? A fighter pilot, top button always open, a cigarette in hand, he was a flamboyant officer, the type that inspires cadets. That he trusted my word is a tribute to the man who he was. That is a rare trait. The value of the man is evident, when you wind back in time and imagine this conversation between a 5th termer and the Squady. PS: I have been trying to get his whereabouts, but have not succeeded. I would love to pay my regards. This happened with me on on 10th December 2022 at Kandivali East. I was travelling on a bicycle vehicle comes from behind, it just tried to get past me. Not trying to stop, the vehicle tyre and wheel brush my foot. I get a small wound.
